Thats what I was thinking. My Dad gave me his old mp3 player to add music too. And My Mom asks doesnt your Dad have some music you like you could add to it? I shook my head and I said no. Then I told her my style of music has changed allot in the last year.

I like Rock music now. Music that has more meaning in the lyrics. How its sang.
I am quite specific in what I consider good rock music. I hate cussing in songs. Nothing like somebody turning their head when I am singing to a song that has the F**k word in it lol

My Family actually doesnt like my style of music. They listen to Pop and Country. I hate it. Its stail. I can't stand country music these days. I grew up on the old time stuff my Grandma likes. Now its all about rednecks and honkeytonk. Sometimes it can be funny. But its honestly not really music...

My Most hated song ever is Pinks Sober. Nothing like singing about how drunk you are and the only person you want to "be" with is yourself. Talk about corny

I don't mind rap music if its actually good. But allot of them are very talentless and they are more worried about singing about booty or haveing half naked woman in the videos with them.

I love Linkin Park, its rap music. And its probably the best Ive hurd.

My Favorite band that I like now is "10 years"
This is a good song by them "Beautiful"

Music is a great way to express yourself if you feal angry then listen to angry music if you feel sad then listen to something sad. I love all types of music and I tolerate some. I love rock my tops are garbage, marilyn manson (not so much his last album) red hot chili peppers. Those three right there are completely different. I also love techno, oldies, and some rap. I tolerate country because my husband likes it.

As far as media having no responsibility I think that they should to some degree. You can't blame music for your actions if you hurt your self or someone else you need to take responsibility for your actions. You can't go and sue Slayer because three stupid kids killed someone. We are a country that passes the buck and parents need to stop blaming others because their kids screw up.

Yep, this is the core of the issue in my mind as well... what is the content and what are the values being expressed. Are they positive in some way? To date, I am not convinced that the darker forms of Rap (and video games btw) do anything except alienate, marginalize, and re-enforce a mindset that is counterproductive to becoming a productive and successful individual. And I don't think you can completely separate the individual from the messages they choose to support and incorporate into their lives.

I think popular music, rap, pop, rock, and even country that is in the mainstream will continue to be a caricature of pass artists with diminishing return on talent and progressive ideals.
Cookie cutter bands, cookie cutter songs, cookie cutter top 40.

I mean Marylin Manson clearly got his act from Alice Cooper and King Diamond from Mercyful Fate.

Remember1997-1998, after Britney Spears showed up there was a explosion of new female solo pop artists. Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson, Mya, Robyn, Christina Aguilera, Vitamin C, etc etc. Dont get me started on the boy bands !

I think that period to me was the biggest cookie cutter, factory produced music since hair metal bands in the 80s.

But it is happening again, lucky Im not the music industries focal point, so Im not in the crosshairs with the bombardment. But Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, The Naked Brothers, the be a show on disney then before becoming a musical act craze !

Like rock, rap has so many sub genres, that as one genre dies out another rises up to take its place. So rap is continuing to evolve, but sadly the only rap music that is shown on MTV is the absolute garbage that record execs know that will draw young impressionable kids to listen. The songs about money, women, and cars....

Your totally correct here. I think the industry is the problem, thats what I said before. They force feed it to us and kids and after a while it becomes a staple of everyday life.

You have MTV and BET and VH1 and all this just shoving this stuff down our throats. Geez....

I never said I hate rap or it wasn't the parents duty to supervise their children...I think that is the first priority..But at the same time, I am a practical kind of guy...I know the more the cling the farther the kid will run into the exact opposite of what you wanted..You gotta let your kids be kids too. This means letting them have enough rope until they hang themselves with it , so to speak. Kids have to learn on their own, was is positive and what is negative.

I think alot of people have misunderstood the reason I wrote the post in the first place, I don't know, but the debates have been fun to read.

I am gonna go on a limb here and name some of my favorite artists. Cause I don't wanna seem like an old guy.

I love Motley Crue, Misfits, Danzig, Slayer, Anthrax, Ramones, Eminem, Kid Rock, Ice Cube, Ice T, Beastie Boys, Black Sabbath, Morbid Angel, Guns N Roses, Hootie and The Blowfish, David Allan Coe, Cash, Enigma, all kinds of crazy stuff.

Thank you. Well said.

I was at a meeting at work several years ago, where I commented how poor people's spelling and grammar was. These were supposedly educated people, most with degrees and certificates to prove it. It was actually distracting and a hindrance to effective work.

The reaction? I was castigated by the facilitator and told that "spelling doesn't count."

A simliar thing happend to me here, too. I recently I got an email from a BYC user who challenged me for using big words and sounding smarter than everyone else.

My response was, not surprisingly, that indeed I do use big words and am smart enough to do so. I do not apologize for that.
They are taught to us for a reason, so that we may communicate effectively with one another.

My question in return was, why do you NOT use them yourself?

I received no response.

The question in this thread was whether our kids are dumbing down. Perhaps we should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a whole, if we aren't succumbing to a similar fate.

I got to a country controlled school. Over half of the students can sing the words to ANY country song that plays on the local radio station. The other half know most, or don't care. There are very few that dislike country. There was one kid that grew up on a farm around here and tried convincing people that "he from da hood" One kid from NY that was TRULY from the hood put him in his place quickly. IDK what's up with all of the da and dat and gansta and OMG THE N WORD! That USED to be in insult, now everyone uses it like bo!
