Positive rooster behavior

I loved my Sarge. Some of you may remember my various posts about what a wonderful rooster he was. Sadly, he died in the line of duty, trying to protect his girls from a thieving, murdering coyote this past summer. My DH finally had a 6' chain link fence installed. Unfortunately it was too late for Sarge ( and several others

), but I do have 2 of his daughters -- 1/2 RIR, 1/2 Buff Orp. They're pretty girls, and when I look at them they always remind me of their daddy and how he was the absolute best roo ever. We haven't had any predator losses since the fence was installed; now I just have to get it covered this spring. (it's going to be a bear to cover; it's approx. 350' or so, with a couple of large trees in the run. I'll just try to net/cover around the trees. This may also keep the smart-aleck guinea from flying out of the pen. He's bright enough to fly over the fence, but not bright enough to figure out how to get back IN.

I miss my Sarge. Moose (originally named Mean Orp Rooster, so named when he was going through his hormonal adolescence!) tries to be alpha roo now, and does a fair job, but he just doesn't have it all down pat like my Sarge. Gotta love the good roos!

Early in my chicken days, just last spring, I drove halfway across the state to save Pantaloons, Spitz, and my other boys from a possible rendez-vous with a stew pot. (I thought then I could save them all). Proud new mother of a bunch of roos and some baby Polish, I went to visit my aunt, who just happened to live around the corner from this place I found out about from CL. She told me that my grandfather had a rooster named Pantaloons. I had thought that generation of my family on all sides were all total New York City people, so I was surprised to hear about "farm animals" in my lineage. My aunt told me that Grandpa decreed that all "top cocks" from there on out had to be named "Pantaloons" or that's what I thought she told me anyway. No idea why that name

So without any other names in mind, I waited a few days to see which of the boys made it to the top. I wouldn't have expected it to be the littlest guy of all. He's half the size of the others, but there was no doubt he was in charge. I think it turned out to be a great name for him anyway based on his appearance- those fluffy silkie legs with the foofy bits of purple, auburn and green.
