One of our chickens is only a couple of months old, the other were not sure as brought her recently and she isn't laying yet so I'd think not very old. The brahma is around 1years old. The coop was a pre built one, the nest box is a little higher than the coop.

They should be roosting by then but not always, sometimes they take a while to figure it out lol

And that might explain it, see if you can make the roosts higher

Kdogg, your flock looks happy foraging. I think you successfully broken your little hen. Hopefully she isn't like some and goes broody in 6-8 weeks again.

She even went back on the roost! :D

They just got inside a little bit ago, it's about 10 to 8 now. So they were outside from like 2:30 to 7:30 with no issues besides the one little squabble with Amber. And no trying to get back to the nest. Although she did go in the run to eat and drink and looked inside the coop once while there lol and she has now gone to roost with the others.

Soooo....

I'd say I was successful in breaking her too! Yay! :D

Oh and I hope she doesn't go broody again too!

And they are DEFINITELY happy foraging! They especially love the compost pile and going up into the woods. Amber has figured out I can find the bugs and comes running whenever I flip anything over or if she sees me with a shovel lol and she stays with me even when the others move on.

And they are now so loud when i don't let them out that i sometimes let them out just to shut them up haha

Wow, lots of people rallying for me to let her... :lau

Unfortunately (or fortunately), I just broke her aha

They are happiest doing things a chicken should do, like scratching and pecking. I have been followed around by a mob of chickens while I garden, they don't miss anything do they? They are always so happy and optimistic. They are a fun pet, and a wonderful hobby.

Unfortunately some hens are repeat offenders.

I hope it's not permanent! Like that she doesn't continue all her life, that it's just a phase lol

According to my dad she's only beem broody a couple days (i just got home from ME yesterday) so I'm hoping it's still early enough she can be broken without the crate haha but she's already hissing at both me and the other hens. I heard it when May entered the coop. She ignored it and sat in a box to lay anyway but still rude of Penny! LOL
