Hello!

I've posted yesterday and today about my 8 month old RIR pullet Mahalia, who's having some respiratory issues. We took her to the vet yesterday and she was diagnosed with an oral yeast infection and prescribed 5ml of liquid Nystatin orally 2x a day for a week. About 10 minutes ago when we were giving her her nightly dose, she seemed to be having some trouble breathing. Her breathing sounded wet, rattly, and like a human with a bad cold. She sneezed very hard towards the end of the dose, and flicked antifungal and mucus all over me and my mom, who were giving her the meds. I also noticed right before we gave the med to her that she had clear mucus in her beak that was stringy when we opened her beak. She was opening her mouth wide today, not gasping but taking a deep breath. Her comb is also starting to get purple at the end. What is going on?

@Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock @aart or anyone at all!

Looking at your other thread she has a yeast or canker inside her beak?
The difficulty breathing may be due to that or she possibly aspirated some medication.
Is her crop still full of fluid? Careful when giving oral medications - I would take a look at this, it may help you get meds into her - you may need to clear the mucous out before giving her the meds though. https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...er-construction-check-back-for-updates.73335/

Her crop is pretty small, but soft and very doughy. She has quite a bit of clear mucus in her beak, and she gasped and held her beak open when I picked her up.
Update: She still has quite a bit of clear, sticky mucus in her beak. I listened to her chest and it sounded crackly and rattly. I'll update again in the morning.
How is she doing?

The vet thinks that yellow stuff inside her beak is yeast infection? If so, then her crop will likely be slow too. Hopefully the Nystatin will take care of it.

Sorry that she aspirated her medicine. Has her beak ever had a bad odor so far? I would be careful to give the medicine very slowly, pull down on her wattles to open the beak, give a couple of drops at a time, letting her swallow. There is nothing you can do for the aspirating, but hopefully she will get over it.

If she's hasn't choked yet and keeps sneezing and coughing, she should be okay. When aspiration occurs, it's nearly always instantaneous death. How's that for injecting a ray of sunshine?

Have you examined her throat to be sure the scum isn't blocking her airway? Your vet should have taken a culture and made sure it's Candida and not a protozoa infection, which would require an anti-protoza med.

I'm also wondering if plain old vaginal yeast cream would be safer to administer than liquid nystatin.

Oh goodness! Thank you so much. I'm worried she may have aspirated some medication. What do we do in case that's true?
