Hello all...we have one peachick, who is 1 weeks old today. It was struggling so we bought it in and put it in brooder with some chicks. They get along great. He was doing great. Today he seems to want to sleep a lot, keeps closing one eye, feathers published, wings down. I took pictures of his stool and how he has been. When I went to change the water, he ran across the cage fine. Seems a little wobble when he stands still. I did get him to take some water with electrolytes and probiotics in it. Any ideas what is going on? I'm new to this. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

For someone who professes to not know much about peafowl Waterfaery gives good advice.
Thank you. Well I do know something about peafowl but thankfully haven't had much experience with too many health issues (hope it stays that way)!

Jsaxman, don't be hard on yourself. You are doing good for your peachick. You were told right about this place being the best for advice! My advice would be to listen to KSKingBee. I've been keeping peafowl for 8 years and I have 14 of them. I've only had one batch of peachicks, hatched by my peahens two years ago. KSKingBee has hundreds of peafowl and raises chicks every year. Almost everything I know about keeping my peafowl healthy I have learned from him and I know most others who use this forum would say the same.

I hope your little peachick gets well. If it does, another peachick would be the best company. First, I would strongly recommend reading the stickies at the top of the peafowl forum and also reading through as many as possible of KSKingBee's posts of advice that he's given to others. You will be off to a great start with peafowl if you do that.

With your profile, if you click into your account information you can add things that you want to be visible for others to see, for example your location.

I thought you all would appreciate these, since we were talking about how good the peacock is as a father. The one chick rides their backs through the pen. Lol

Wow, they are fabulous photos. What a special peacock you have! The peachicks look like they are thriving. ❤️
They really are. Even the ones in the brooder. The yellow one will be 2 weeks old tomorrow and is getting more color each day and loves to fly. The brown one is very vivid in color and is trying to learn your fly now too. The older one mothers it. It is cute. I am proud after everything I went through to see them thrive so far. They are amazing! 😊

No...the other peachick passed a few weeks ago. It was a single chick that hatched. Yes...the other chicks are chicken chicks and they are all acting fine. I will get the coccidiosis treatment. I wasnt sure if it would hurt it if that wasn't it. Now that I know...I will try it thank you. This is its eye. Again...thank you for your help. You are a blessing.

For someone who professes to not know much about peafowl Waterfaery gives good advice.

Cocci is the number one killer of chicks so that is most likely the problem but there can be other reasons your chick is not feeling well. It could have gotten chilled or picked up a bacteria infection although it takes time for a bacteria infection to manifest itself either can kill a chick quickly.

Make sure the chick can warm itself and yet get away from the heat source. Give it high protein soft food like hard-boiled egg mixed into its crumbles. And treat all chicks with toltrazuril at least once monthly until winter.

By not filling out your profile you make it harder for us to know where you are and what climate you are dealing with so our advice can not be spot on for your particular case.

The eye is probably going to be blind, cloudiness is a sign of going blind. The swelling around the eye is from being pecked on. Mixing different ages and species of chicks can be dangerous if not watched carefully. Be glad they were not guinea keets, they have a habit of eating the beaks off of peachicks.

Thank you so , so much! I made a divorce for the brooder with chicken wire to separate them. It seems to be working. I will try the egg and have given it some electrolyte water with probiotics in it also. Overall, he seems to be doing okay. Just looks sad. I think he needs another peachick. We have others from the other gender that should be hatching within a week or so. If not, I will find another peachick. This little one is the sweetest thing. I want it to be healthy more than anything.

Oh and another thing is to bookmark anything you find useful on here because otherwise it's often hard to find the right things when you need them. For example, the post I linked to above was something I had bookmarked so I was able to find it quickly. Building your own stash of bookmarks is a good idea.
