Post if you have chicks right now and/or waiting for some.

Rhondapiper, I'm waiting for May too!! I live in Baltimore and a fox got my Barred Rock in October... I've been waiting to replace her and get a few more ever since. Not exactly a 12 year wait, but it feels like forever. Now, I've gone and ordered more than I can keep. Where did you order from? I got mine from MPC last year and every one was properly sexed and healthy. I'm getting some extras which will be about the same age as yours, so keep me in mind if you need to augment your flock. They're all cool types of bantams. Mille Fleur, EE, Silver Sebright, and hopefully I'll be able to pick up some of Sara's absolutely magnificent lavender Ameraucana's around the same time. She's in PA. And, you are reminding me about the chicken show. I forgot... It's around Essex right? Do you have details?

Six weeks to go.

I have 10 Ameraucanas on the way (the real deal, not EEs) - ordered from a show breeder. I have 25 due to arrive the same week from a hatchery: 15 dominiques, 5 cochins and 5 Turkens. My plan is to offer some of the dominiques as started pullets. My DD plans to offer a pen of the Ameraucanas at the fair. We'll see. It is just sooooo much fun to have little chickies around!

I wasn't supposed to have chicks but I have two in the brooder downstairs and an order getting ready to be sent to MPC for about 15 more. Hubby made me promise no chicks this year......I guess my word is just no good when it comes to chickens

We're picking up 3 chicks (right, only three;)) on March 23. We have 17 eggs on day 2 in the incubator. I hear our TSC is going to have chicks soon - we may just have to get over there...

KayP,

I got them from My Pet Chicken since I wanted more variety than The Mill up here carries. For refence though, The Mill feed store in Bel Air, Whiteford, and Hereford all have 2 weeks in May where you can place a chick order and pick them up in April. They all had Barred Rocks, RIRs, and a few other breeds this year, just not the ones I had my heart set on. The Whiteford store will also special order from a large variety of other breeds after they do their first big order (but that would have put their arrival all the way in June and I really could not wait that long).

The Poultry Show is on the 22nd in Bel Air and the thread about it is here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=119080

If
any of the tragedies I worry about occur, I'll definitely send you a message and I really appreciate the thought. Thanks!

Gee- I'm glad I'm not alone in waiting until May for my chicks! I ordered from Ideal in early Feb - originally had a mid-April ship date, but then they let me know that the Barnevelders I had inquired about would be available May 6 - so now the whole batch will be shipped then.

Expecting 5 pullets each of:

Barnevelders
Welsummers
Speckled Sussex
Columbian Wyandottes
Partridge Rocks
"Ameracaunas"

I guess the late date is good - gives me time to make a brooder for 30 chicks and clean and sanitize the coop/pen and modify it to accommodate 30 young pullets! What will I do with so many eggs if they all survive and all turn out to be pullets???

I ordered so many because:
1) I wanted a good sampling of several breeds I wanted to try and could not buy from the feed store here.
2) I did not want to risk getting cockerels for warmth.
3) Yet I did not want to risk my chicks getting cold en route.

Can hardly wait 'til May! First time doing mail order!

I am waiting for May as well. This is my first go with chickens and my feed store advised me to wait until at least May. Cold will not be an issue by the time they are ready to move to the coop. I ordered for mid May but received an email from MPC they will be shipping May 4th.

3 Buff Orpingtons
3 Easter Eggers
3 White Crested Polish
4 Silkies

If I had ordered from my feed store, in order to have bantams, I would have had to order 12 bantams. And my only choice would have been whatever bantams were in the box when I got there. So I went online and purchased from MPC. We really wanted the ones we ordered.

We still have to get a brooder ready & get supplies. The coop building is here but will need modification. We have to wait for the snow to melt first.

I do not mind the wait too much. I am spending a lot of time reading and learning. May will be here before we know it

I just ordered for the first time(from Cacklehatchery due on April 27):

5 Buff Orpingtons
5 Barred Rocks, and
5 Light Brahma.

I ordered these breeds based on three qualities:
1) Good with children (I have three)
2) Relatively good layers, and
3) I thought they would look nice together in a chicken tractor.

Now I am having all sorts of evil premonitions about everything from pasty butt to predators. It's akin to the feeling I had about eight months into my first pregnancy when I was sure this was actually going to happen, but not sure if I would be any good at it!
