Post Phoenix Pics Please

Pics
Here is a pair I rescued from the auction. It's the first time my wife and I have ever owned any

. So as you can figure I have a question about them. In the second pic I have highlighted a broken tail feather, will that repair it's self or can it be plucked out to improve his looks?
My son wants to try showing this breed for next years county fair. We figured this pair is a good start for him to start learning them. I've ordered 15 more from hatchery but he doesn't get them for a while.

I just got a pair yesterday, a young cockeral and a full grown hen. I want to know all I can about this breed. How often do they lay? What age do the roosters start mating. If anyone has any links or info it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Quote:
Hens start to lay around 6 months of age. They aren't consistant layers. Do lots f research before you decide to get into this breed. There is more to them than regular chickens.

I am having trouble finding a good place for info. All I am finding is info on how to take care of their tails, which is great, but I want more general info.

Others will most likely dispute me but hatchery birds aren't the best quality. Especially when your planning to show and are looking for your bird to be if not perfect but near perfect. Your best bet is to buy from a reputable breeder. And do research on them also before you buy from just any breeder. There are many out there that claim al their birds are top notch perfect and when you get them you find out they're not. Then you've paid lots of money for something you didn't want. I'm sure the breeders of these birds will chime up sooner or later. Just research everybody before you buy.

couldnt be truer!
Hatchery "phoenix" and I use that term loosely, are junk for the lack of a better word, when you are wanting quality birds. There are a small handful of good breeders out there.
However, on a true phoenix, tail aside, there arent really many special requirments for them compared to regular chickens. The onagadori birds are a hole nother story, near impossible to keep by average hobbiest, but for the most part, phoenix are simple, they are totally unrelated to onags, DO NOT come from Asia, that's the Ongas, another comon hatchery lie.
Fish meal, and oils help maintain the tails, any longtail birds will benifit from it, even fish scraps. High perches help.
They are fairly disease resistant, etc
Will be glad to answer any specific questions you may have on them, just ask away.

EMVICK is correct, there's a "difference" between the two varieties, also about doing research on the breed. I have a few Bant. Phoenix from fellow BYCrs & other friends, but before that I had hatchery birds. Never again will I walk that mile. HOWEVER,...Either way you have to "start somewhere", right?! Not to mention all the learning & experience, as you stated

I think it's great your 'taking the time' to learn...so hang in there

There will be eggs available from some of my gang this fall if interested.

I have a nice white pullet that's from BBB. Originally I had a pair but the little male passed away. Will see if I can grab some pics to share of her and my other brats!

Hate to hear you lost the male you had, that stinks.
All I have them in are bantam size, but they are nice ones

Should be caught up on eggs in a week or so if any are interested in some, or some more
