Thanks Aubrey, I appreciate the critique. He is out of my old original Bowman/Shaw line birds. I must also correct myself on age, he is almost 13mos old, My other wht back up roo is 10mos old, sorry for misleading you. I'm going to wash him up a bit, take away his ladies and get some pics on the perch with yardstick or tape measurer (sp) so you can see the actual numbers on the tail length without being stretched out. We took original measurements with the t.m. I held bird and end of TM on skin while hubby stretched out the longest tail feather, so the 3.8 may not be accurate either, but that's the length we got. I figure he's probably done growing length, right? How do you measure your birds, maybe an easier way to do it?? Thanks again

Just look to see if he's still in blood feathers or not, and you'll know if he's done or not, it the quills havent got hard yet then he's still growing.
Never really bothered actually measuring any here. The hens break them off after about 2.5 feet seeing how they are all in breeding pens.
Plan to seperate a few after the next motl and do single males just to see what they will get though.
Quil base to longest tip is the only right way to do it though, sounds like what yall did, just be sure you're at the base of the tail and you got it.
If he's 13 months and has never molted, he's either done or pretty close. Mine go about 18 months.

I checked, He's still in blood feathers, so maybe it will get a bit longer. Thanks for the help and info.

took some new pics yesterday, figured I'd load a few up for yall to see.
Most of these came in this fall and you can see the tail breakage as a result, but they still look decent.

Yeah Chris, he said it's one out of his onagadori hybreds. His longest saddles are already 15 inches. He lost a lot of tail in the dog gone shipping box though. We had 5 shipped in at once, even though it was a swan box he used, it still broke them up, same on the blacl/gold one he sent, and the lavender pair.
