Do you guys have any tips on having hens lay more?
I have my 2 hens with really nice tails but they only lay every other day then go broody after like 5 eggs....
I keep collecting them because I want more of them... Suggestions?

So my friend and I are starting to breed longtails together (Ohiki and Phoenix) and we hatched some eggs from Boggy Bottom and I wanted to share some of the pictures we have of them!

My girl, Pip laid her very first egg today! I am so proud!




Here it is compared to the others we got today from our Rhode Island Red's.
She did so great for her first time!

Just wanted to update everyone on our phoenix situation. After predators wiped out a bunch of birds, we are left with 2 silver, 1 'silver pyle', 1 golden, and 4 light brown cockerels. Then for pullets, we have 3 'silver pyle' pullets, 1 light brown pullet, and 4 silver pullets. Our silver hen also just hatched out a pair of chicks (silver cockerel, gold pullet since she was with a gold rooster) so we can only hope. After having a closed flock for ages, we are starting to see things pop up like the recessive dominant white that made the pyle chicks, and some green legs which we've never dealt with before. On a bright side, we have a couple silver pullets that look AMAZING! They have gorgeous tails and there was just something about the oldest one as she grew up that stood out to me.
On a sad note, our main white rooster passed on today, he had always had heart issues growing up and was just under a year old. His saddle was still in mostly pin feathers with a majority of them at 18" +. We have the birds that produced him and also chicks from him so all is not lost.

In total, I think we'll keep the white/silver pyle rooster, the best light brown, the better 2 pyle pullets, the light brown pullet, and the better 2 silver pullets.
Now that we have internet at home again, I hope to be able to post some pics before too long.

There is no recessive dominant white..LOL...There either or...Pyle's are dominant white X duck-wing...Recessive white is solid white that pops up out of parents of birds caring one copy each of the gene........Sorry for your loss....TM

Well, I just get it all jumbled up, LOL. He popped out of normal parents like our recessive whites in the past so we thought it was recessive. But when we bred him to a silver, he acted dominant white because he threw the 'silver pyle' chicks. These are the chicks I mentioned on facebook that were sexlinked with the males hatching out white (like a guinea keet white) with yellow stripes and the females being yellow with rust stripes (like a gold sexlink). Having a closed flock and doing line breeding like we have been doing really shows what your flock is carrying as far as genetics go. I'd love to get some nice light browns again, we had issues around the farmstead this year so were unable to get some eggs from BBB but maybe next year...
