This whole thread is a good education for anyone interested in orpingtons. And the quality of a lot of the birds is outstanding and helps people understand what they need to have in a show quality bird. Plus the part about the Im sorry but completly disheveled look of the babies that scared me 1/2 to death when I first saw it, I thought everything from Must have had a bad temp spike in the incubator to am I feeding them really bad feed thou I spent top dollar to buy what I thought was the best , then finnaly people in here said Oh thats just a normal phase for this breed. WHEW. complete with pics of thier bad phase so I felt better.
I have had australorps forever and thou they are based on Coopers black orpingtons from england , I have never seen the messy feathers of this breed babies.Amazing how they grow into this beautiful fluffy bird.
Hard enough to get basic things correct to me but lot of you take it to a whole new level with the colors, AMAZING! havnt seen a chocolate yet thou except in england and australia.
Here is another little thing I have learned in here and THANK YOU for this.I have a little australorps hen that I tote around and show ,. I knew she had good things about her, a very nice eye and head points..Lots of things nice about her, but one thing I didnt know until now is she also has that U shape, to me She was just an appealing bird to look at .Now I understand why she does well for me that classic U shape is present.there is a pic in here somewhere of her.
Also I have a freind pastor Romig from Pa. he is an APA judge , he is going out to Oklahoma to a big show flock dispersal sale, He is going to pick up some what are claimed to be very good show quality australorps and a few black orpingtons for me..does anyone know anything about this sale? Hes on his way out and will be bringing back lots of bantams for the faulkner family , himself and me, the faulkners show around Pa and NJ and some in NY , they have champoin Hamburgs plus other birds, they really won just about everything in harrisburg last year.
Im just wondering if anyone knows anything about the birds at this sale, He took off so fast I didnt get a chance to ask him, I trust him he sure know chickens but Im just curious who the breeder was. some of these older breeders dont get on the internet at all. This little old man is so passionate about chickens he thinks nothing about hopping a plane to go look at some in calif.. He brings back some doozies too.
And now, wouldnt you think this was a nice little orpington hen? she is a champion blue australorp in australia, and someday God willing I would like to rise to this level ,I have a Looong way to go
