Good use of repurposed materials! How many chooks are you planning on keeping here?

I am in LOVE with your coop!!! WOW! I especially love your roost and droppings pan...I can tell you've filled it with PDZ...LUV that stuff!!!! The only thing I'd do differently is to lay the 2 x 4 'flat' for better overnight footing for the birds. Kudos to you on such a magnificent job!!

Your coop/run are GREAT!! What color(s) are you planning on painting it?? I also like your use of those 'triangle' pieces of wood as braces on the run...gave me an idea!!

Hi chickenlover237

Whatever coop design you choose I have just three comments to pass along as it was helpful to us:

#1 - Have the coop positioned as close to the backdoor as feasible to make short trips to collect the eggs - especially helpful in snowy or rainy climates. Hens will not lay all at the same time and you'll be checking at least a couple times a day to gather eggs before someone goes broody in a nestbox full of eggs or decides to be an egg eater. We collect the eggs at our back door and can actually sometimes hear the hen lay her egg in the box - silly girls will scratch away all the fluffy straw to drop their egg on the hard bottom! It's amazing the eggs don't break this way.

#2 - Another thing we learned after collecting eggs in the rain is to have enough roof overhang over the collection box/door so you or the nestbox doesn't get soaked while gathering the eggs!

#3 - Don't WASTE money on 1" poultry wire but get hardwire. You may think ordinary poultry wire is secure but it bends and tears easily. We had a couple very large neighborhood mutts break our backyard gate and mangled our poultry wire with their teeth and claws. Glad a good neighbor chased them off before they got to the chickens but the poultry wire was mangled/misshapened beyond repair! If we had 1/2 or 1/4 inch hardwire it would have stayed secure and in good shape! Yes - it will probably be the most expensive cost equalling if not surpassing the materials used in the actual coop hutch itself but better than finding blood and feathers scattered around the yard. We also had the coop set on patio stones 5 feet all around the coop so the mutts at least couldn't dig under it.

That's my 3 cents worth of suggestions - Smiles and enjoy chickeneering!

Wow there are some amazing coops on here! Here is mine. You can't see from this picture but they have a fan inside the window of the coop and a fan on the back side of the pen closest to the coop so it is out of the weather.
