post your chicken coop pictures here!

Yep! And we all know (from experience)....scrounging is GOOD!! :lau  When I go over to my sister's house now my BIL immediately says "I have nothing left to give you!!" :gig  I think he's afraid I'll start tearing down his house!

I love Monday evening bec on Tuesdays the trash truck comes through. If I need anything I can usually find it. Posts and lumber aside, I got a very good cage and a bench that just needed repair, all the parts were there.

As you know, lots of the materials for my builds have come from the side of the road. Sometimes what I find shapes the design of the next build.

Well,,if anyone out there has a gallon of energy bottled up....I NEED IT PLEASE !!

I like to get certain things done each day and today I wanted to get the last panel of hardware cloth attached, the door covered on both sides and the door hung. I have the panel done one side of the door covered and hinges attached on that side. I only have the other side of the door done to meet my goal (ok....LOL...I wanted to get the door hung!)

Used pieces of concrete blocks to level the thresh hold then placed a 2x4 over it.. Will have to frame in the top when I hang the door,
Can hardly see it but the last panel of hardware cloth attaches to the left corner of the coop
Update; went out to put away all my tools etc and my DH came out to help me..Wanted to help me cover the other side of the door!

I got all my stuff back out and we covered the back of the door "his" way..

The gnats got so bad...he went in and I went back and finished it "my way" !!

"Level"? What's that mean. Lol. I am challenged by "level". I try though. I like what's you're doing. Looking good and it will be done well in advance of the cold weather. I like to make goals for each day's build. In my mind, everything is easy. I think: ok, just need to cut those and screw them then cover with hardware cloth and hang. Hummmmm. 1/2 hour maybe. NOT! Hours!!

PS. I use a commercial stapler to attach the hardware cloth. It has proven to be the easiest for me and the fastest and the hardware cloth is attached tight and sturdy.
I even made this for my earrings which were in a messed up wad before.

Same principle as a panel of the chicken coop.

.. Someone made the statement that their chickens loved twinkies... I treat mine every so often..between salads, etc. So I went out and found a box of twinkies and took two down to the two coops.. In the first little coop are my older chickens..1 1/2 yrs.. Then there is the new coop that I'm working on and it has 7 chickens in there. 1 is about 6mo and the rest of them are about 4 months. I took a twinkie and broke it into 2 pieces and threw one in each coop. In the older coop, the chickens went wild.... in the newer/younger coop, they wouldn't touch them!!!! Finally took the 2 pieces off of the floor.... LOL they wanted nothing to do with the twinkie.
Yep,,,,can you see the 2 pieces of twinkie??? Finally, picked them up and fed them to the older girls

These still have creme on their faces!!

Don't panic everyone. A Twinkie once in these chickens' life isn't going to kill them or hurt their eggs. Yes, sugar and processed foods are killers but I've given my girls a sponge cake once when we had a couple leftover donated items and guess what? The girls are still alive. I was paranoid about what I gave my girls the first year we had them but after seeing all the crap they pick out of the yard to eat including mounds of pure dirt I don't worry about a sugar rush once in their life

The main things to definitely avoid are chocolate or chocolate flavors, avocados, and onions - these foods are seriously injurious to their health to cause immediate illness. If you want to see chickens with creamy faces feed them some high protein Greek yogurt or kefir. The chickens lick the stuff off each other's faces and the extra protein is good for them and a good digestive aid.

I know someone who lives on an island in British Columbia. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lasqueti_Island No electricity to the island so everyone there lives off-grid. There are some cars there but the ferry is a passenger ferry, the cars don't leave.

It works for her and she does have internet access. Not sure how good her internet access is during winter though. LOL- We discussed incubators one day and her choice was dictated by which one could run on batteries.

If you're off the grid why not use Nature's incubator - a broody Silkie or two?
