post your chicken coop pictures here!

We have six chickens and took the plans for a 6x6 shed and tweaked it. We stil need to do the run, paint the outside, and I plan to put some flower boxes under the windows but for the most part it's finished. It's perfectly imperfect. :)

If the chickens let the kids go in their house, do the kids let the chickens play on their swing set?

Looks like you did a good job though I would change the roosts. Replace the 2x2 with 2x4 on the flat. Chicken feet really aren't designed for gripping a roost and I think that "curved under tail" look is due to them trying to balance on a too narrow platform. None of my chickens look like that on their 2x4 on the flat or their 3" round fence rail roosts (parallel at 4' high). Also, you'll notice they are all on the top one (highest one is preferred) so even though you probably have provided 2x or more the minimum suggested 1' per bird roost space for the 6 chickens, they are only using 1/4 of it.

*I* would replace the 2x2 rung ladder with a 2x4 on the flat mounted just below the window, 12" from the right side wall. I think that would place it just higher than the second highest 2x2 in the ladder? My guess is that location would be < 3' off the floor, not a problem for the birds. You would probably want a mid-point angle brace back to the wall. If you used a "full triangle" type brace and mount the 2x4 in brackets at the ends, you could flip it over so the dried poop will "disappear". I have noticed that there is rarely any poop on the round fence rail and given it's dimensions, it is self supporting over an 8' length. The birds don't seem to have a preference between the rail or the 2x4 so if you have one handy, a round fence rail instead of a 2x4 would be fine as well and if mounted in round holes can be rotated on occasion. I would NOT use pressure treated wood, the chemicals can't be good for the chickens.

Since the door swings out on the right, it won't be a problem if the chickens' heads or butts stick out past the door opening a wee bit. They will have the minimum suggested roost space on the "highest" roost which is the only one they are using anyway. It will also give them space to turn around which looks like a challenge in the picture. AND it would give them 2 "end walls" which seem to be the preferred sleeping spots for my girls.

Wow this is great info!! I had no idea about the roosts. I'll pass this on to my husband and see about making some of these changes right away. Thank you so much!! And yes...as a matter of fact, the chickens have had a few swings on that blue swing in the middle. Though not by choice.

I too think they look uncomfortable and crowded on the roost. It looks like they are being punished and made to stand facing the wall like the teachers used to make us do in the olden days.

Don't beat yourself up about it. They have deluxe accommodations by most standards. A little time spent on a slightly too small roost won't leave any lasting effects.
