I have a question regarding nesting boxes. A lot of coops have them set up so that you can open them from the outside to collect the eggs. This sounds very convenient, but assuming you do NOT want your birds roaming around free how do you keep them from escaping when you open the outside door? I would think if there was a hen laying or sitting on the nest when that door is open it could easily jump up and out, even if only as a reaction to being startled.
I usually collect when I see them all in the run. I don't like disturbing them if they're on the nest trying to lay. On the occasion I have opened the nest door and none have ever tried to get out. Usually they'll squawk at me because I'm disturbing them. My broody that's hatching eggs just sits there and looks at me while I collect. And my coop has a door instead of a top lid.
I agree with Pstock44. I too have nest boxes that open from the outside, and I try and wait until all the hens are out. But when I open it when there are one or more sitting they just squawk a little, but they haven't ever tried to jump out.
But if you are worried about them jumping out, you could open the door just a crack and peek in.
Great chicken house very functional. I am a carpenter by trade. If someone wanted to cut a few corners on this. they could make one end higher and slope the ceiling rafters, put 1x4 or 2x4 on them to attach the Tin.
It would save a good amount of wood and the step of putting up the rafters.
You have lots of places on the inside of this chicken house to support your roof also so you could use 2x6 for the ceiling /rafters if you wanted.
If you order your tin you can get it any length and delivered.
If you just want to go to home depot and get what they have just make sure you have a good amount of overlap on the tin joint.
One change I would make for my weather would be the top 4 four foot of out side wall would be plywood to give them shade and keep wind and rain out.
I'm probably going to regret building the coop in that spot. The pile of sand in front of it is where our pool goes, it's the only somewhat level spot in my yard.
