A young Dun Sumatra cockerel.

Looks black to me too. I don't know about duns but in chocolates, they can be really dark, almost black but there is no green sheen on a chocolate. I see green sheen so it appears black to me. Breeding is the only way to confirm sometimes. I'm not doubting you, just an observation. I haven't seen enough Dun in person to know if they have green sheen.

I have to agree 100%. I have dun sumatras as well and they are very dark. The hens of course dont have a shine, but it is very common for the males to have a bit, even my blue sumatar do. Bird posted is 100% a dun sumatra, just a very dark one.
Dun is just like blue, it comes in a number of shades. It can range from a pale smokey grey to nearly black. a good clean brown is ideal but they dont all come out like that. Just like in blues, they can range from a plae almost lavender look to the near black. One thing with both colors on the darker birds is the main body is usually dull with no shine, where blacks will have a full body shine to them

In my limited experience working with Dun, all of my males have been relatively darker in color. They all also have had a green sheen in their hackle, saddle and tail feathers. This is the same male I posted before, a few weeks younger I think though.

This first picture is with flash, you can see the chocolate hue to his feathers more here I think.

This picture was taken without flash, again he looks much darker here, almost black. But you can still discern the chocolate color on his breast.

Like BBB stated, Dun has a tendency to behave like Blue, with varying shades of the color. I'm sure with careful selection and the right genes at play you could produce some evenly colored more "milk chocolate" colored birds. I like the variation of color though.

ETA: I've also found that it's very hard to photograph an accurate representation of the Dun color, especially when trying to capture chick down. In person my Sumatra look a lot different, more of a warm brown.
