Prayers needed for Gloria.

Update on Gloria's leg, it is healing, but she is being pecked by the other hens? Should I bandage it so they can't peck it? Or keep her seperate? she's inside with us at night.

Her other leg (she just keeps on having problems!) right where her leg connects to her foot, has a large slice in it. It looks like if too much pressure is put on it, her foot will break right off! Will this heal up with some neosporin, or do I need other treatments? There's no open wound.

That second photo looks like a really unusual wound. Hmmmm. I wonder what is causing it? I hope you get some answers.

You might want to make a seperate thread in the Emergencies Diseases Injuries and Cures section. That looks bad.

Aw! Poor thing. We'll be praying for a quick recovery and no return of problems!

I would suggest posting this in the emergencies section as well. You may find some good advice there.

You could try some Blu-Kote for the scab (available at the farm store). It is an antiseptic and anti fungal spray with a blue tint that camouflages the red that can trigger pecking. You might want to wear gloves if you try it since it stains. Vet wrap may be worth a try, but she could just pull it off.

If her other leg does not seem to be causing her pain, then perhaps it is not too serious. If I recall correctly, Gloria had scaly leg mite right? Sometimes the leg scales do not lay flat even after they recover. After all that Gloria has gone thru, she won't mind a little neosporin to prevent any problems. It might not hurt to massage her legs with some vegetable oil occasionally to prevent any re-occurrence of scaly leg mites.

If Gloria were my chicken I'd soak her legs 2x daily in a weak betadine solution. Purchase the betadine from any drugstore. Mix a small amount of betadine to warm water (make it look like weak tea) and allow her legs to soak in the warm solution for 20 minutes. Do this for 7 days. Apply a dry bandage (Use nonstick gauze and vet wrap) after the wounds dry from the soaking to encourage drainage. You'll notice yucky stuff on the gauze, but that's okay. You want this stuff to come off.

Definitely keep her inside in a clean area. You need to keep her feet out of the dirt until the wounds heal. If she seems depressed, allow her chicken buddy to stay with her.

After 7 days evaluate her wounds and retreat if necessary.

Good luck!

Tuesday nite: We gave her a huge bowl of ripped up chicken and scrambled eggs (ate 3 bowls... good for protein.) I cleaned all the puss and dirt off her wounds(s) with hydrogen peroxide, gobbed on neosporin and bandaged both wounds (the fallen off scab wound and the splitting foot wound) tightly so it doesn't fall off easily (but not too tight). Then I gobbed on some vaseline around the bandages (no vaseline on the wounds) and got it between her toes, under her foot... everywhere. (and all up her leg too) I put Vet RX in her food and water, rubbed some on her comb and wattles too. She's eating and drinking fine, but not active at all. I sprinkled DE in her feathers and food (just for luck) and then put her in the blue carrier for the nite to spend with us. I just offered her some water and she didn't touch it.

Wednesday:
Gobbed on some neosporin and iodine and bandaged it up and let her free range the day away with her flock.

Today:
Ok, we soaked her feet in epsom salts and peeled off as much of her rotted skin as we could. Then turned her feet red with iodine, and finally we blue kote-ed it. (now her feet are BRIGHT BLUE!) So, she is laying on a pile of newspapers
with nice comfy blankets under it in the cat carrier tonite, and tomorrow morning the feet should be dry. I'll post more pics tomorrow (i'm gonna post some I took today in a min, but I didn't get any of her feet.) She pecked her foot as we sprayed it on and got a blue beak on one side, hahaha! Well, atleast blue is a good color for her. :)
Ate some bread and cucumber peels, drank good amount of water.

Tomorrow's plans: check on blu-cote, re apply if needed. Feed high protein foods, vet rx, DE and bread to fatten her up.

Poor girl was probably in a lot of pain after we peeled off the dead skin and scabs off her leg and applied iodine.

Swaddled her in a towel because her feathers were soaking wet.

Fast asleep after a long day. :)

awwwwww poor baby. Keep up the good work! Could she have sliced the back of her leg at the ankle part on something? like a wire or fencing? It almost looks like a slice that has started to heal from the picture.

you even get stink eye luv from her when wrapped in a towel......
