i just had a very bad quail attack last night. 3 (making a total of 5) more quail were killed and one was very severely injured. all having the heads torn off at the shoulders and eaten with very little else eaten (just a couple of bites out of the breast on two) and one hen that was very badly injured. her wing was torn clean off at the shoulder and a large patch of skin was removed (bigger than a toonie) around. the breast muscle seems mostly okay though. there is also a large injury to the back of her head. hoping it is skin deep but it might not be. the wing was eaten too. i have only 7 birds left including the injured one who i dont know if she is going to make it. a couple of the other survivors have neck feathers torn out at the front and feathers missing/ cuts on the top of the head. the coop had wire spaced about 3/4 inch apart and was fully closed so had to of been able to get through that. the first attack was during daytime around noon, the others were at night or morning. i live in central BC canada and my guess is ermine, but i have never even seen footprints here once (although they do live here)
i have moved the quail all inside and have a rat trap and small cage trap baited with the quail leftovers inside the coop/ run. i want to know what you guys think is the culprit because i want to be ready and have this thing dead TONIGHT. we have literally every predator here. thanks
