Legally I think they have to be 8 weeks or older. It's that for rabbits and they wean way earlier

It depends on what state OP is in.
Some US states have laws that say 8 weeks, a few have laws that say 7 weeks, some do not have any laws about it.
That goes for puppies, kittens, rabbits, chicks, and many other pet-type animals. Laws about how young they can be sold, and whether they have to be sold in groups (chicks) are not consistent from one state to another.
