Hi all! I have an official pick up date for my 15 chicks of July 23! Decided on all females only because I’m new. Will prob go straight-run next time but I have enough worries than dealing with 1/2 roosters!
I’ve read through 100s of posts, but would like some individual advice if that’s ok!
My bring home brooder is a 4 sq ft dog crate with side door, that will go inside a 24 sq ft baby gate pen for when they get a little bigger. I figure a few days in when everyone is moving around nicely I can just open the dog crate full time & let them out into the gated pen which I’ll put mesh over at about 2 weeks. They will remain in the pen until they are 4 weeks old & then to their outside coop which isn’t ready quite yet. It is a 8x10 converted wooden shed.
Will 24 sq ft be big enough for them up to 4 weeks? I’m petrified I will forget something they need. I am going to get a heating plate of some sort as well, any recommendations for one that will fit all 15? My garage is very warm, between 65-80 degrees most summer days.
Thank you so much! I am super excited! I babysit the neighbors chickens when they are away but am new to baby chick raising & am a nervous mama in waiting! :)

Congrats and welcome to BYC!:welcome
24 sq ft should be fine as a temporary housing at 4 weeks old.:) I've never used heating pads before, but heat lamps work fine as well. Adding electrolytes in their water could also help boost their immune systems!:D
What breeds are you getting?

I’ll put mesh over at about 2 weeks.
Have the mesh in place right from the start just so you are ready. Don't put anything off for later that you can do early.

My brooder in the coop is 3' x 6'. One time I kept 28 full sized fowl chicks in that until they were 5 weeks old. Those were mostly girls. Another time I kept 21 chicks in it for 5 weeks but these were mostly boys. In both cases it started getting pretty full but I had no overcrowding issues. Don't worry about the chicks not being able to find food, water, or heat in your 24 square feet brooder, they should be OK.

That is a very good question, especially mentioning the 15 for size. I don't do heat plates so can't help you.

I am getting 3 each of Gold Wyandotte, Black Australorp, Americauna, Buff Orpington & Barred Rock! I wanted docile breeds that didn’t look alike lol. I did buy those ankle cuffs just in case there’s look-a likes in the chicks and I can keep track of who’s who. I’m thinking up names. There will definitely be a Thelma & Louise! 😂 So excites! Thank you for the electrolyte info!

The only reason I’m waiting is so I can walk in the first week or two. The pen is only about 2.5 feet high & I don’t want to scare them approaching from above right away. Once they get used to me I’ll put the mesh on & access them from the top. The mesh & pipe cleaners are ready so it shouldn’t take long to throw over! Thank you for the tip!

Welcome to BYC!

You're getting plenty of good advice already. I haven't used a brooder plate, but I've read that people find that they don't really hold the max number of chicks that are claimed -- maybe as day-olds, but not for the full time of their need for heat.

Will you be keeping all 15 or do you plan to keep your favorites and sell some as started pullets?

What do you have for a coop? They'll be ready to be out in the coop before you know it -- possibly as early as 4 weeks if they feather out quickly and the nights are warm.

We are keeping all 15! ❤️ My family runs a small farm stand & would like to add eggs to it in the next few years. Will probably get another 15-30 next year so will have enough to sell regularly by the following summer! I’m in charge of raising the chicks & I don’t feel comfortable with more than 15 at a time). Will add another coop & run at that point along w predator fencing, there’s 50 acres to clear out but we won’t be letting them access all of it. Most of it is overgrown & used by the cousins during hunting season lol.) I’m so glad they decided they want to include eggs! I’ll be splitting chicken duty w my aunt & also growing some of the veggies.
