Hi all! I have an official pick up date for my 15 chicks of July 23! Decided on all females only because I’m new. Will prob go straight-run next time but I have enough worries than dealing with 1/2 roosters!
I’ve read through 100s of posts, but would like some individual advice if that’s ok!
My bring home brooder is a 4 sq ft dog crate with side door, that will go inside a 24 sq ft baby gate pen for when they get a little bigger. I figure a few days in when everyone is moving around nicely I can just open the dog crate full time & let them out into the gated pen which I’ll put mesh over at about 2 weeks. They will remain in the pen until they are 4 weeks old & then to their outside coop which isn’t ready quite yet. It is a 8x10 converted wooden shed.
Will 24 sq ft be big enough for them up to 4 weeks? I’m petrified I will forget something they need. I am going to get a heating plate of some sort as well, any recommendations for one that will fit all 15? My garage is very warm, between 65-80 degrees most summer days.
Thank you so much! I am super excited! I babysit the neighbors chickens when they are away but am new to baby chick raising & am a nervous mama in waiting!
