President vs. Arizona

I always wonder what exactly it is people want Obama to do? Presidents don't really have any power over the economy... so besides that old gripe, what do you expect a president to do or change while in office?

Why is it GB fault then? Ross Perot, a wealthy business man once said that the president can use the white house as a bully pulpit for the economy. Past presidents like Roosevelt did something. We can quit spending money on wars and spend it here with Superfund projects. The president is CIC he can do a lot and propose a lot. Increasing social programs is not going to help the economy. The Keystone pipeline was a step in the right direction. He can ask congress to impose tariffs on imports and get our manufacturing base back.

His problem is/was is he is inexperienced in the ways of getting things done, Bill Clinton was a successful president because he figured out how to work with a Republican Congress and Senate... experience.

I didn't say it was GB's fault. I just said the problem started while he was in office. You just jumped to conclusions.

Oh yeah, and GB was the one the "wars" were started under too.

Oh also - I was hoping someone would give me a specific thing that a president can do that would actually change our economy. I always hear in the complaints nothing but rhetoric and vague suggestions. Cutting spending doesn't count, too easy and not really going to change anything right away.

Several people on here have said that the President has no con troll over the economy, or very little, or whatever he does won't come to pass for a long while....

I'd like for all of you to take a look at what president Franklin D. Roosevelt did in the 1930-40's. However, when war started, civilians were put to work to keep our forces going Strong, and Roosevelt's work crews no longer needed the work. They went to work to keep our armed forces going. Instead of the war bleeding the country completely dry, it provided jobs.... now, even those have been outsourced.

Maybe if things get bad enough, the newest generation will learn some self sacrifice, and discipline... but I doubt it, unemployment is much too cushy for them. (I seethe when I see what people buy with their food stamps, when I am forgoing luxuries to buy good healthy food for my family).

As far as our "war" we have going on now, we either need to send our boys home, or quit playing pattycake, and fight like men.

WWII is most credited with getting us out of the depression. Roosevelts social programs did little for the economy. The war created jobs. When jobs are available, people work.

Things were getting better and the war just made it happen faster. I think that the president can do more for the economy then this one has.

Control, not con troll (big green ogres really???lol).

I mentioned the war there, and why this war we're in right now that isn't, but could be helping the economy.

The GI Bill? when I say social programs I do not mean welfare.

Reducing the size of government would help the economy alone. If you had a fat lazy kid on your couch and 1/3 of your income was to feed him how would you be doing economically?

How do you create jobs? I don't think you can just make something up and have it stick. Jobs exist when there is a supply and demand,if I don't need it then I'm not going to get it( unless the Gov. will give it to me.) There needs to be money spent to have money be made, people have money and some are starting to spend it. In my opinion it's because they have some hope for some change in the future. I think the economy will take a huge step in November, in which direction well that is still to be determined. As far as food stamps go, if they were to regulate it better or do away with it, many of my neighbors wouldn't be able to afford their parties or trips to the casino.
