Price of hatching eggs, aka, Update: $ 1070.25 for 12 eggs on BYC

But to pay even $5 at auction and then shipping for pet/hatchery quality.

I don't mind paying 20.00 for mixes at all. BUT what I don't like doing is paying 20 also for shipping. I think 10 for shipping is acceptable on a dozen eggs...maybe even 12.00. I love the mixes because they do lay a lot of eggs! And a lot of mixes have beautiful coloring that look good walking around my yard

So there are still some crazy's (me for one) that will pay that for a dozen eggs. Another thing...they seem to stay healthier as well. I have only three mixes right now that I hatched from my own eggs and they have been my best three layers next to my red sex link

Every day I get an egg from them.

Shipping depends on the distance and the weight of the box being shipped. I would rather pay $20 for shipping for eggs that hatch then $10 for scrambled eggs. The shipper should be able to charge the cost of shipping and the shipping materials. In my case the cost of shipping materials is $4 per box. There is one dollar in bubble wrap, one dollar in foil, 2 dollars in shipping paper. Most times if I ship from coast to coast the cost USPS charges is OVER $10. Mutt eggs are usually available locally, most farmers selling fresh eggs are selling fertile eggs. And there are respected members selling quality eggs on here for under $20, one in my state sells good quality RIR for $15. And I am sure they know how to pack and charge the amount it costs. I have bought one box of eggs on BYC auction, shipping was $8, that should have been my clue because they were packed with no padding, completely scrambled and leaking from the box when they arrived. A complete waste of money.

Okay, I know I'm not the original poster of this thread and I haven't released photos of our flock (and they are just now laying), so not shipping any eggs....

I do ship differently than most folks. We ship eggs in the same way we would like to receive them. We bubble wrap each egg separately, putting in a regular box (not an egg carton) which is then cushioned and set in a larger box. These are not the prepaid priority boxes but we use the large boxes that can be ordered through USPS as the standard mailing box. Our mailing costs can often be higher than the prepaid boxes but we find that they arrive in better shape, so it's well worth the extra time, packing materials and shipping costs. Occasionally with a large order, we will use an even larger outside box. Even as carefully as we ship, we cannot guarantee that there will be no breakage in transit. We do not guarantee the percentage of your hatch as the incubators temperature and humidity are very variable. We will provide assistance to you during the hatch and help in every way possible to have the best hatch possible. The shipping price above reflects careful selecting, packing, priority mail and confirmation delivery.

We do insure our eggs as requested by the buyer., by the way and the USPS will insure eggs.

I would rather pay more for shipping on eggs and get them in better shape and more viable than have cheaper shipping...

With all that said, what would you pay for one dozen Lavendar Orpingtons (hatching all lav's of course) .....don't worry, smile, I won't hold you to it and our eggs won't be available for a while.....

Pm me if you like or post here.....

Interesting thread.

Glad to see others that understand the value of quality shipping and willing to pay for it. Many times I do not bid on eggs because I consider the shipping to cheap. I know what it costs and I know when the amount requested will not cover proper shipping. Can't really say what I would pay for Lav Orps cause I do not have desire for them, I have to much now. But usually what I am willing to pay has more to do with my budget at the time I am interested.

Thanks for understanding.......It takes me over 1 hour and 15 min. to properly pack 1 dozen eggs but yes, o me it's so worth it.....I've been saddened by "bad ships" where the egg was given one thin strip of paper and slung in an egg carton and maybe a tiny amount of bubble wrap around that and then just slid into the low cost box....... That so reduces the opportunity of appropriate changes for an intact egg to arrive. I am on a limited budget but I'd pay more for shipping than the "lowest rate" possible, because if the egg is worth shipping, it's worth every possible chance of getting there and that means careful and extensive wrapping!.....(smile) I copyright that last. phrase......It's my quote ......I'm moving it to my web site!
