Price of hatching eggs, aka, Update: $ 1070.25 for 12 eggs on BYC

And here I just throw the feathers away...LOL I completely forgot that people raise chickens just for their feathers. I would sell feathers from my birds rather than bury them but I doubt I have the right ones anyway. Don't most people dye the feathers to get the bright colors for flies?

As a former truck driver, I don't think it was the PO. The contract driver had to stop over for dinner and movie and a movie and another movie. A one day trip took three days! It dropped to the 20's that night.

Have some hatching eggs ordered, but requested the breeder bring them with him to the April 3, Eldorado show. Had already ordered the eggs when I noticed he was judging the show....just 45 minutes away. I trust his driving better than a contract driver.

On the bright side, have added my own packing peanuts to the replacement order: American Buff geese!

I posted the info at https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=278186&p=25

As a former USPS contract driver, I can tell you that 1. the majority of drivers who are contracted are daycab drivers. Thus they only have an 11 hour work day. 2. These loads are shags. They are not direct P.O. to P.O. runs. 3.lots of things delay delivery.

It is completely unfair to blame the drivers, they deliver what they are hired to deliver. Many things could have caused your delay. It is sad that the chicks died, but without a real explination for the delay, no one should be pointing fingers or making exagerated claims.

Weather, accidents, waiting for another driver's shipment, illness, flat tires or other mechanical failure, reduction of shipments, etc, etc, etc........

I also know for a fact the USPS has been cutting runs and delaying deliveries to consolidate freight in an attempt to save money. I lost my job due to this very thing. The USPS cut my run from MA to FL. 9 drivers lost thier livlihood because of this cut back. And, these are happening all over the country. Where they think that mail is going, I don't know. What I do know is because of these run cuts, it takes longer for mail to get from point A to point B. Even chicks. THAT is NOT the driver's fault.

Lastly, as a former driver, you are undoubtably aware the DOT continues to change the rules for the HOS. So regardless of the run being only a day's drive away, if the driver was out of hours, he is out of hours and thus MUST shut down. And, what that driver does or does not do on his legally required break is his business and is completely irrelevant to the situation.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss of birds.

Priority. If the truth were known, it was probaly a half empty trailer that got dropped and was waiting for additional mail. Most of these drivers are daycab drivers. If driver #1 only had a few hours to drive then it is possible the trailer sat somewhere until another driver or that driver could take it on. The driver(s) probably never knew he had live birds.

Ideal said expess can take longer than priority from TX to Arkansas.

That's weird. Express is guaranteed 1 or 2 days, though. Normally, Express takes precedence b/c they do not want to refund you shipping and you pay for guaranteed delivery with Express. I have always gotten my chicks in one day priority from NC to TX. Not sure why.

No clue why they didn't get there and there were so many losses (part of this could very well be due to the cold, though), but I am sorry, regardless.

I may be mistaken but I believe Ideal delivers the chicks to the post office. Not sure about your area, but the PO takes the mail here from the local PO directly to the sorting hub no matter if the truck is full or not. From there they usually go straight to the airport. Where I have run into a problem lately is with non US postal employees(contract workers) at the airport who do not know what they are doing. I have had 3 boxes of hatching eggs sent back because the contract workers do not know the difference between perishable and live shipments. I guess I am going to have to stop marking my packages.

(Psst... I have a pair of project Lav Orps listed in the BSA section with no bids.)

When did you post them? I was poking around the BSA the other day and did not see them. But then that is not what I was looking for.

Just today.

The procedes go to a good cause - my college education to become a high school Science teacher. I'm so close to being finished, but need extra $ to pay for summer courses.
