PROBIOTICS for you and your chickens

I really like the taste of the Kombucha as it is straaight frome the jar but thought Hmmmmmm what would ginger do or what if I put some pineapple in it or You know what I mean! I am curious to try the black tea that I have brewing right now (But I really am fond of the green tea just as it comes from the jug! Either way the chickes will get their first taste of the Kombucha (I have been verry greeeeeddddyyyy with it and haven't shared with them (BAD CHICKEN DADDY) LOL! BUT they get at least one quart of Kefir a week if not more and a whole lot of treats to boot !!

Thanks Ginny

Wow! I am really enjoying this topic! Thanks for all the awesome information you guys!

I have the nourishing traditions book by Sally fallon and had wondered about making kombacha, but have never known anyone who does. I was always worried about the *ick * factor

Now that I've seen folks actually talk about liking it, I've got to order a starter!

And the lacto fermented veggies...yum! Wild fermentation is really an awesome book!

Does anyone know if You can over do the probiotics for our chickies?

I love this forum....

Ernie,
I tried feeding a fresh scoby once. It wasn't a hit. Never tried feeding tea itself. Let me know how it works out. I wonder if one could dry a scoby, cut it up then feed it? HHHMMMM.......
If you are drinking tea that fast, decant sooner into smaller glass jars. I use 32 oz mason jars W/their cap. Works well for me. Then I can start another batch (w/ the scoby) sooner. I often have 2 gallons going, plus a few 32 ouncers going.Love my tea!

Miss Lydia- How would the poop differ if they get too much? would it be watery?
Do your chickens drink it straight up or do you soak grains or bread with it?

So far the only thing in probiotics I've given my chickens is yogurt and butter milk, but just thinking if they are getting to much the poop is where it would show up yes probably watery looser than normal, you'd just cut back if that was the case. I have been following this thread just haven't gotten into making it yet.

I have only given mine yogurt and kefir not home made. I'd like to make my own kombucha and kefir. My first try with kombucha didn't work so i'll be trying again... I want to find some good milk before I try the kefir... I refuse to use soy! it's not the health food people think it is! Wonder if almond milk would work but that is probably expensive. My preference would be raw cow or goat milk but can't find a supplier.
I like the idea of keeping my girls healthy... not waiting until they get sick and then pumping them with antibiotics!

I know what you mean about soy. I use to drink it alot till I started reading so much about it. It's very hard to find raw milk in our part of the country, so I just try to buy what hasn't had hormones and antibiotics put into it. I like the taste of Almond milk but it's pricey.

With Kefir You have to use a whole live milk and I am pretty sure that soy and almond milk lack the ability to culture Kefir properly! I have also heard that Dead (Homeginized milk) will not work either!!
