PROBIOTICS for you and your chickens

Someone was asking about the coating on the inside of canning jar lids. The coating is BPA which is starting to be in the news alot lately. I have stayed away from it for awhile now. It is found in most plastics, canned goods and on the lids of canning jars.

I do agree with Joe about starting with one! If you start with the Kefir first then get used to making it! Then You can in a couple of days move on to making Kombucha and if the lady has readily available cultures they you should be able to pick up fresh ones about anytime you like though!

Kefir sits for 24 hours with the grains and then you strain the grains and start over making a new batch! They say you should age your kefir after straining for about 2 days either on the counter or in the fridge so it is really up to you! The first 2 or 3 batches I drank it right after straining it and I would say it gets less sour after it ages for a while in the fridge! I make my Kefir a Quart at a time, I strain the Kefir and put the grains in a clean jar and start a new batch then I put the kefir in a canning quart jar with a lid (Plastic one) and store in the fridge for a day UNLESS I am giving it to my chickens then I give it to them that day while it is still warm OR I age it on the counter 2 days and then give it to them warm! Ginny has some really good Ideas on decanting for use after it is made

Kombucha takes about 7 to 10 days to make and needs to stay between 74 to 84 degrees to grow the culture right!! I made me a makeshift Kombucha incubator with a foam cooler and a night light that keeps it about 84 degrees in my house which is about 69 to 70 degrees and mine is done in about 8 to 9 days Ginny has some really good Ideas on decanting for use after it is made! I have found that if you do not refrigerate the Kombucha after the Scoby and tea are strained then It will start to grow a new Scoby! Kombucha is really easy to make! Take a jar like is in Joe Bryants first use 8 tea bags or a tea ball and equivelent tea to 8 bags and pour in hot water (about a gallon of water leave about an inch to top of Jar) add about 1 and 1/2 cups of sugarand stir! Let tea steep till color stops changing and tea is about room temperature THEN add your scoby and cover with a paper towel and Hold paper towel in place with a rubber band put it in the tea incubator turn on the night light (I cover the jar with a towel) In about 7days check to see if new scoby has formed fully if so taste it by sticking a straw down past the scoby and taste if tart but not sugary take out scobys (You will have your starter and an new one a baby that is about a quarter of an inch thick take them out and lay on a paper plate while you strain the tea then strain and decant the tea and start over again and add either the mother or the baby scoby and pass on one of the scobys or make 2 gallons

I think that Chinese medicine and ayerveda have much in common. Such as medical herbs or food. Also in trying to keep in good health rather than getting sick and trying to get healthy.

I agree with Ernie and Joe. Since the woman with the cultures is not far away start with whichever you choose , then get the other. Neither is hard, but it is best to stat with a fresh active culture.

Ginny just started comparing the Asian style of medicine and Ayerveda and yes the concepts are quite the same! Ayerveda believes that the elements are 5 Earth/Air/Fire/Water/Ether or outer space and the chinese believe in Earth/Wind/Fire/Water basically the same! I will let you know the further I reasearch

Hello everyone.

I am new to BYC and kinda new to raising chickens. I stumbled upon this thread, and I'm truely interested in the Kefer and would like to try it myself.

I was born & raised on a working dairy farm (with chickens) until 15 when a fire destroyed most everything. Until then, I drank cows milk straight from the cow and never even tasted store bought milk. Once I tried store milk, I loved the taste and never drank milk straight from the cow again. However, I was my most healthyest and felt my best way back then. Now, I've transplanted to Alabama with my family (years later as an adult), and I just feel terrible most days. Doctors can't find anything wrong with me. I've been poked and proded and still they tell me I'm fine, but I feel like crap and completely drained of all energy. I have also developed IBS and I suspect Lactose Intolerance.

I have never been a health food nut, nor do I buy anything that is fat free, low fat, reduced fat, sugar free, or low in sodium. I think that when they alter the food, they are taking away vital nutritions and adding chemicals. I also don't take any kind of suplements or vitamins, because I see them as a chemical and not real nutritions. I have always had a garden every summer, but I'm finding it hard to continue this in the south with the red clay dirt. My gardening is not what it used to be in Pennsylvania.

But, after reading this entire thread, I think I might just give the Kefer a try. I need to do some checking in my area to see what I can find available. I have 2 ladies down the road that raise goats, but don't know if they milk them. I also have a working dairy farm about 15 miles away. Guess I'll be checking to see if I can get milk from any of them. I've heard about a farmers market also in our area, but I've never been there. I'll need to make a trip there too.

I'm excited to try Kefer and see if it will help me to start feeling better once I introduce it to my system. I hope it taste good. I remember trying buttermilk as a child and hating it. I am also going to try the homemade yogurt. My kids and I just love it. If I can make it cheaper and healtier, I'm all for that. I've already located the organic yogurt in the store to get me started. I'm interested in seeing what positive effects it all will have on my chickens as well.
