You think we can market it as some sort of uber health food?
We'd have to share profits with Ginny, though....I think the beast is growing in her kitchen!

BTW Ginny, do you have a link that talks about growing mealworms? I'm tired of buying them, and my girls require me to bribe them for love....I walk up empty handed and they are like "UM....Do we know you....?"

For meal worms i followed the kind advice of these BYCers https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=425181

I
have not fed any yet to the bird as I want more to procreate so I can have more of them to feed I was thinking that they would be really gross, but they are kind of cool.

So, I have, oats sprouting, mealworms growing, ate my first DE, today (tasted like kaopectate) all because of BYC! Kombucha, no knead bread and kefir predate my current nuttiness!

I just figured that in the winter, my birds should have a fresh protein source. After the initial investment it should be very cheep (I mean cheap).

Where does one get Virgin coconut oil? Coconut oil is my favorite to massage with in the summer, but I think that mine is not food grade. any favorite brands?

I find Spectrum organic expeller pressed virgin coconut oil in the health food area of my grocery store. I find it has a great taste and use it both in my cooking and as a body oil.

Gingered carrots are as fallows:
4 c grated carrots, tightly packed (enough to fill a quart jar to 1 in below the rim)
1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger
1 tablespoon sea salt
4 Tablespoons whey

Mix everything in a bowl. Put in 1 quart jar or 2 pint jars. Press down until juice covers the carrots. Cover tightly (I prefer plastic jar lids since metal ones have bpa in them) Leave on your counter or in a cupboard for 3 to 7 days (I let my house get pretty cold in winter so I do 7 in winter and 3 in summer) After that put in the fridge. If it tastes too salty, give it more time in your fridge. I find it develops more flavor and tastes less salty the longer I age it.

Question for those doing water kefir and milk kefir. What do you do with the grains if you don't want to make a batch daily? Can you store the grains somehow?

Off topic, but just wanted to ask, if anyone has done pickled eggs ???

See ? Kind of on topic being a chicken forum but way off Kefir....is there a pickled egg thread ?

My family loves pickled eggs. Kids love them so much, a gallon jar barely last 3 days when I make them.

I use an old family recipie to make them using beets and vinegar. Store them in the fridge for a week or so, then whala... the kids tear them up. I usually manage to get at least one before they are gone.
