I have a silly question. Is it really hard to quilt your own quilts. I have two that needs quilting and i am debating on trying myself either machine or hand or trying to find some one else to do them for me. But my biggest question is if you are doing it by hand can you do the nice little curly Qs and swirls like the machine.

Sure, Dana, you can quilt any design on it you like, but it will take you much, much longer. It won't be as heavily quilted as those with meandering patterns that you do by machine, but yes, you can do it. There are quilt stencils you can buy with designs on them and you trace the patterns with chalk pencil or disappearing ink pens made for that purpose. I've never done anything except hand quilting. I keep trying the machine for quilting on fabric practice swatches, but haven't gotten the hang of it yet. Generally, I like the look of good hand quilting as opposed to machine, but it's hard not to think of the ease and speed of machine quilting. You can do in a few hours with a machine what will take a couple months by hand.
 
Updating this thread since I will be presenting Ranee's quilt to her at a family dinner on Dec. 18. I have it quilted except for a couple of minor spots, up to the outside border so thought I'd post a picture for you of how the quilting makes the design pop. I put it aside completely last May when the weather became extremely hot until just a couple of weeks ago.

Some of the back detail-wish I'd thought to do it while we had it outside, but it's too dark now. This is on my kitchen island.

Thank you. My stitches aren't as even as they used to be, I can tell you that, but I keep plugging along.


Have to tell you that I was in the Murphy NC flea market's small quilt shop last Saturday looking for a certain type of chalk wheel marker in blue. The owner was out of what I wanted, but had one in a much higher price (gulp, $9 for one chalk marker is too much right now). I was telling her that one section of this quilt was frustrating me because I couldn't see white or purple or pink markings on it and I really needed the blue, too bad she was out of the less expensive one she had. She went over to her quilt table, pulled a blue one like I was looking for out of her basket, made sure it still marked and handed it to me. She gave me the marker, said she didn't know how much chalk was left, but I was welcome to take it for the quilt! I was so touched at her kindness, I hugged her. I did buy a yard of fabric from her shop as a thank you, the least I could do. And the marker worked perfectly, just like I knew it would. SUPER nice woman.
