Propping open awning windows

I'm getting to the point where I have to decide how to finish the windows on our new coop. I am using recycled wood sash windows. I think I want to hinge them at the top and use them like awning windows.

It's hot here much of the year, so I will want to have these windows completely (rather than partially) open most of the time. One option is to use a chain and fasten the windows open by attaching the other end of the chain to the roof overhang.

I could buy awning window hinges, but I've checked online and they run between $20-30 a pair (and I have three windows). Ouch.

The last option I can think of is to fashion some kind of wood prop to go on the side of each window.

For those of you that have this kind of window, what do you use to prop your windows open? How's it working?

I just use a scrap of 2 x 4 for my recycled windows-- a longer one for the warmer season and a small piece for cooler temps. I also used pretty cheap standard hinges from the hardware store. It works quite well. The windows keep the rain out, but I can prop them open for near-constant ventilation.

Our recycled window was put in backwards for easy use. We can open and close it from the outside and put in in upside down so the fabric is up so the chickens can't peck at it and will make it harder for a unwelcome guest to get in. We also have an awning over it and it has worked great. Never have to shut the window during rain and helps keep the sun out. Highly recommend some type of awning whether build or bought!

Take a piece of thin sturdy wood like a five gallon paint stick, and cut some grooves like large saw teeth. Stick a screw in the frame for them to catch and you can set the opening width easily.

Mount the block to the window securely, drill an oversize hole in the window end of the paint stick and place a screw through it into the block. (make sure the screw is far enough from the window surface so the prop hangs vertical when it's closed)

Paint sticks are free at HD and Lowes!
SORRY FOR THE CRUDE DIAGRAM.

Thank you! That's a great idea, easy to build, easy to adjust the window opening.

I use a dowel rod and it works great...I drilled a small recess just below the window (put a screw in just below to "brace" in case) and another recess into the frame of the awning. Hasn't moved yet....

I have a recycled 4-pane window hung by hinges on top. I keep it open 24/7 as the insode is covered with hardware cloth for security and ventilation. I keep it propped open with a piece of scrap wood - and when the big thunderheads are coming i can just run out and pop out the scrap wood to close the window to keep things dry. Depending upon where I put the stick, I can have the window open at various angles. Check out my page for photos of my coop windows.

Hi, I put a window in my little coop like you're talking about with hinges on the top. I put a handle on the bottom of the window then a big round hook in the top of the peak of the coop, then attached a rope with a hook on it to keep it propped open....It makes for a nice breezy coop on hot days, and is very secure, but I built the run so they could come and go as they please. I don't lock them in the little coop at night.
