Puppy with ducks.

My five Khaki Campbell ducks were raised around dogs. We had a wonderful, old Golden Retriever who was incredibly patient with them. We also dog-sat my parents English lab several times from puppyhood to adulthood. Our Golden passed away in September and we are getting a new Golden puppy in four weeks (he will be eight weeks old then). We rarely let my parents puppy near the ducks and when we finally did the ducks chased her and scared her half to death. I do not want this puppy terrified of them but I am hoping we get off to a "leave the ducks alone" start. I was wondering if anyone has gone through this and has puppy-duck advice.

I am not a dog trainer at all. But my lab wanted to eat my ducklings. He was like a shark in bloody water. We started my keeping my ducklings right next to me while I’m sitting, and told him no! He got in trouble every time he even gave them the stare. He eventually learned over a series of months that the ducks were “mine” and he wants me to give him attention more than he wants to eat them. And he gets to be near me if he’s good.

But if it’s the other way around, I would do the same thing. Only allow them to meet when you are right there. I thump my ducks bill when they are being jerks. And they hate their heads being touched so they normally quit. So don’t allow them to chase the puppy. Immediately intervene. They will get the hint that they can’t be turds to the puppy.

I have 2 goldens. One is the mst stable easy going dog you will ever meet. He has been with the pekin. My younger golden is complete opposite. High strung, high prey drive. He tried killing my cat that he was raised with. He is not trusted around anything small. Same amount of obedience classes and training. The point is, don't count on the goldens to be the same. If they are, great and consider yourself lucky. Just be careful.

Good point! Both of my puppy's parents are hospital therapy dogs so they have been bred for a calm temperament but that may not extend to ducks :/ .

Just keep in mind retrievers teeth a lot so they like to chew and bite things as puppies more so than a few other breeds. I personally wait till she looses her puppy k9s. But retrievers have been bred for so long to retrieve Birds without puncturing and squishing them your dog will probably be just fine!!

So sorry about your golden retriever. I have a blood hound mix with lab. She will be meting our ducks so soon. I have always thought it would be cool to have a "guard" dog for my ducks so tell me how your experience went with them. Well GOOD LUCK!!!!
