well first day is ok.Heat lamp no.A little bit of light would just help so they know where they are and don't tense up freak out you know.They don't need light, heat or otherwise at this age.

I have to disagree. Straw and hay both mold when wet and pose a serious health hazard risk of aspergillosis. (Spelling)
They know that shavings are not food, especially by the time they are 6 weeks old.
I keep chick's on pine shavings from day one and they don't eat them.
