Our neighbor actually has his outside house light positioned so that the light from that seeps into the coop.
Will that be good?

well first day is ok.Heat lamp no.A little bit of light would just help so they know where they are and don't tense up freak out you know.

They are more likely to choke on wood shaving though,but still be careful.I would just do hay.

WAIT NO!Chicks will eat pine shaving!Maybe choke on it and kill them.I would do hay or straw you can try Pine shavings just be careful.

I have to disagree. Straw and hay both mold when wet and pose a serious health hazard risk of aspergillosis. (Spelling)

They know that shavings are not food, especially by the time they are 6 weeks old.

I keep chick's on pine shavings from day one and they don't eat them.

The coop is covered though and has a tarp so it won't get moldy.
Do you think it'll be safe?

straw isn't recommended as it can get slippery and cause the chicks to have leg issues. We always use shavings from the feed store and it is just fine. Ours pick it up and carry it around but don't eat it.

It will still get wet inside just from the chickens droppings. This will cause mold.
