Puzzled, PLEASE HELP!!!

She's been panting for 5 days. We live in coastal San Diego where it's almost never hot and she has plenty of water. We've been to the vet and he is stumped as well.

Chickens can suffer from Arthritis and Also gape worm will both make a chicken pant. look both up and see if those symptoms are more what your feathery friend is suffering from.

Ok, just added another pullet to the sick bay in the garage last night

. When I went to lock up for the night she wasn't on the roost, just sitting all fluffed up on the floor. Her crop is full but not overly, not squishy or airy. Now she is sitting under the heat lamp with her eyes closed. I am giving tylan to both. Neither seems interested in food so I am force feeding a couple ml's of watery food down them. There are zero signs of discharge from eyes, nose, no sneezing, no sour smell from their mouth, nothing caked around their nose or beak and they are breathing easily, no rasping. I don't know if this is the right antibiotic to give or not, I have some Duramycin-10 but honestl don't know which is the correct one to use, tylan or Duramyci???? Poor Goose and Marilyn, I don't know what to do for them!!! Both are lovely and very friendly Marans. When I clean the poop board today I'm going to spray it with oxine.

All other chickens are running around acting normal but I'm paranoid and keeping going out every half hour to check on all of them. I'm just at a total loss as to what it could be and how best to help them!!!!

So I'm thinking mine and your chickens are maybe internal egg layers. Egg Peritonitis... That is kind of the conclusion I've come to finally for my little white leghorn.

Are both your marans from the same place? It might just be a genetic thing.

Sorry, it's stressful. I know what you're going through! Please keep us posted.

Two pullets now, fluffed up. I suspect it could possibly be cocci. I recommend dosing them with corid, it certainly wont hurt. You can purchase either the 9.6% liquid solution or the 20% soluable powder in the cattle section at your feed store. You'll have to mix it up and use a full syringe (without needle) to dose them 4-5 times a day til they can drink it on their own. Make a fresh batch daily. Dosage for the 9.6% liquid solution is 9.5cc per gallon of water for 5 days. Dosage for the 20% soluable powder is 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water for 5 days. Dont add anything extra to either mixtures such as vitamins, ACV etc...

I just finished giving their bottoms a soak in warm water, there were stings of egg white and yolk in the water. Now what? Still have them on Tylan, should I switch antibiotics? I can't feel any shells inside them but gave them both a squirt of olive oil up there to make sure, plus some down their throat.

I did have 8 soft shelled eggs from this group. I didn't expect them to lay so soon since they are (unrelated) Marans but a week ago put oyster shells in their coop and several bowls of it in other places so they wouldn't miss it.

Is this hopeless? In your experience, do they ever fully recover from this? Should I keep the lights off in the garage so they don't lay? I feel sooo bad for them!!! I'm going to make them some scrambled eggs, maybe that will entice them to eat?

Just bumping this up, sorry, I'm so worried!

The corid - I'm going to get some today but will wait a bit to see if someone responds. I should dose the entire flock, correct? If it is cocci is there something I should treat the ground with????

After corid treatment how long do I have to toss the eggs?

I'm still really upset about the egg yolk/whites coming out of one of the girls after soaking her bottom in warm water. Is there any chance she will recover from this? Should I change her antibiotic from TYLAN to something else?

My flock is closed, I think, as I either hatched them or bought as day old chicks from a hatchery.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!!!!!!!

I would do whatever is recommended by dawg53 (lots of experience and has helped me before too)! Some chickens just aren't as genetically healthy as others, and maybe that caused their egg-problems too. Also, just in case, you might check for any bugs on them in the vent area. Sometimes mites/lice can make them look really lethargic and drain their energy. I just treated 4 birds this morning with a drop of neem oil under the tail and I expect them to perk right back up tomorrow once the bugs are dead. Your situation sounds more serious than just bugs though. I'll be thinking of you and hope something works out for you.

I don't think I would use Tylan since it doesn't sound respiratory. If you don't find the corid, another antibiotic you can use for cocci is Sulmet, which they often have at the feed store. Be careful not to overdose with it though, since it can be toxic. It's 1/2 tbsp for a quart of water I think (check label to be sure). You can dip their beak down into the treated water to make them drink some every hour or so, assuming they show no interest in drinking on their own. Just be careful not to hold the beak in the water longer than a second at a time since they might inhale the water and drown. They need to lift their head up to get the water to go down between sips of water (I'm sure you already know that, but, just trying to help with anything I can think of).
