Thanks!Wow, somehow I missed this thread until now. Excellent duck chalet!
Thanks! Chopped straw?
We have an archery range on our property. We use straw bales as the backstop for the targets. Sunday we replaced the bales in the archery range, then took the old straw and laid it out in the bird yard to help with the muck. The birds absolutely love it. I wouldn't buy the bags of chopped compressed straw unless transportation of a bale is an issue. The bales are far cheaper than the compressed bags of chopped.
If your area is like mine, people will be giving away bales of straw in early November/Decemeber. They buy bales as decoration, then get rid of them once Halloween or Thanksgiving is over.
My ducks never did learn how to use a ramp - they kept falling off even the little one that went into their first house.I had to make steps out of pavers. I put outdoor carpet runners on them to protect their feet. But then I kept stumping my toe on the pavers - so I gave up. now that whole set up has been repurposed elsewhere.
It never ends.
LOL. So we never put a ramp to their pool b/c they struggled with the little ramp to their house. When I did the pool, we added 16" square pavers. After the multiple toe incidents, I had my husband make a set of steps. They used both the pavers and the steps. We did very low rise - i think it was 3" rise. All of that is gone now b/c I just had too many obstacles in their day pen for my klutz female Pekin. They do still have raised cots that are 4" off the ground and they use those fine. You may just want to keep trying with the ramp - place peas or meal worms on it all the way up. if they still don't use it, or fall off a lot, try pavers or steps. Wishing you luck!Dern!
Would they use the stairs you made before you got rid of the pavers? Or did they not like those either?
