Quack-shack

Where did you find your pool? I can't seem to find anything shallow like that great is big enough. Mine holds 60 gallons. .that is a lot of water to dump and refill!

I cut it down with sawzall, and then sanded the edges until they were smooth and rounded.
I wanted it to be shallow so it would take less time to fill up, and if the ducks jumped out of the pool they are less likely to hurt themselves.

Ok. Knowing my duckhouse design, I need to ask more winter questions.
I think someone mentioned that the cold isn’t a real big problem for ducks, but that wind can be. So I’m going to make a temporary windblock. Now it’s already going to get down to 37*F this Friday. I know this isn’t exactly freezing, but what do I do when it does get down to or close to freezing? Do I need to drain the pond to keep them from getting in it? What about their poor little feet? Will they get frost bite if the ground gets snow and ice?

Mine don't care how cold it is They will swim. That part is mostly up to you wether or not you want to deal with freezing water and such. Personally I found it easier to just do away with swimming water during long periods of freezing weather.
But the first year I had just two call ducks I used a bird bath heater to keep their pool open all winter and it didn't hurt them one bit. No frostbite or anything. .but they did have a dry house to go get in whenever they got too cold.
I believe the consensus from what I've read around here is that as long as you provide a dry place where they can get out of the wind they should fine.
Maybe you could use some plastic sheeting or clear shower curtains to put around just part of your run? :)
