Hi all,

My stunted quail chicks have finally been growing, it was definitely the food brand that was the cause of all our past problems, so the quail are now getting much rounder and feathered. They’re a month old. Now I’m trying to figure out what a couple of these colours could be.

I thought Rocky and Dot were just both pharaoh type, but Rocky has some prominent back stripes so I’m wondering if they might be a sparkly?

Dot:

And I’m still at a COMPLETE loss as to what Cookie could be. They’re quite scruffy still but any ideas?

Can I have some pictures of their chests? I'll be able to sex them by the chest.

So happy they are growing!!! I am trying to figure out all the color and pattern distinctions myself. I have only been breeding for temperament for the past few years, just starting to try and figure out breeding for color.

Yes, the chest feathers will help a lot! I am so happy to hear that you were able to find the issue! How interesting that the feed was that deficient in needed nutrition! I am glad you have food that is better for them now.

Cookie seems to be a bit silvery...or diluted in coloring from something. I am not real good at identifying patterns and colors well yet, but the prominent white striping looks similar to my Falb fees, so perhaps a pharoah with a fee gene mixed in? Others that have hatched lots more quail will be of more help, but the chest feathers are super helpful too if you can add some added images?

This is my Falb Fee male...the 'wild' type has these white stripes too...the Falb Fee changes some of the color patterns I believe...no browns, only blacks and grays and white...

I’m not really asking for them to be sexed (especially since until I know what Cookie is I can’t even be sure that they can be feather sexed) but here you go

Yeah Rocky’s the exact same colour as the pharaoh colour so maybe not falb fee?

Yeah, some colorings though can't be fully determined without seeing the chest...so I would say Rocky is a wild type female based on color and speckled chest feathers and Cookie looks like she/he has some silver in the mix...it is tough to tell with them being so newly feathered, so you will have to add more pics when they get older :)

It’s hard with the current feathering but I think cookie is a boy that is a silver Egyptian, so silver and roux with wild pattern. But once they’re more evenly feathered we can probably tell more easily. The other 2 are pharaohs (wild types) there is a lot of variety in what some think of as “plain old” wild. It’s not as cut and dry as people think. Some will have more brown, some more black. Especially in mixed flocks where range patterns get crossed in and out, you’ll have pharaohs that favor Rosetta and rosettas that favor pharaoh. As for gender the first is a girl, the other 2 look to be boys.

I’m not positive, so don’t hate me if I’m wrong, these are my first sparklies, but I think these are sparkly:

They’re only a week and a half old, and as I said I never had them before. But I think the sparklies have a lot of barring with bright coloring in between.
