Quail pen idea...

plain old cots, lay lots of eggs, love em.
sounds like you are ready to go.
I really enjoy me some quail egg salad sandwiches.

I checked out your blog thread, like it.

like the new pics, looks nicely constructed. cant beat all that for 30$ with a stick.
I was thinking maybe you could raise the back end on clean out day and spray out with a hose into your wheelbarrow.
I like your ingenuity.

I guess I could just put rabbits in these pens. I think I can get them easier then quail(apparently). The kids probly wouldn't mind and I'll only need to change the feeders.. Hmmm... anyone want to buy some quail egg cartons? I have 200 10-hole clear cartons.. P.M. if interested. I plan on moving to S Carolina in the fall and rabbits might travel better too... Thanks for those that tried to help...Bigdtc

I think rabbits are great and can be feed without commercial feed if need be.

I think both animals serve a purpose different from each other. Why don’t you still get a few birds just to get a feel for them and see if they fill your needs? I hate for you to wright off birds after you put so much work in to them.

Look at building an incubator and hatching your own eggs. The kids would love it and with doing your hatching you reduce the risk of transferring illness when replacing birds. You can get eggs shiped

Yeah the thing is I did buy a new incubator, gb feed, grit and bird feeders and I'll have to put them on Craigslist at a loss. I've contacted other breeders that have nice websites and looks like they have lots of birds(as advertised) for sale but I think they either believe I'm going to "claim" their bloodlines or they just want others to think they're in the big time bird business and likely only have a few for pets..I just wanted meat and eggs..lol

I love the quail barrel housing! I would like to make and try out for my quail and buns also. Bigtdc, are you NOT getting your quail now? What about hatching eggs yourself, getting your $$$ back?

A stroke of luck...
So, I was upset about not being able to find young quail and after some thought ordered 60 jumbo cot eggs Friday night. They are not too far away and should be here mid-next week.. Of course, the day after I ordered them, a BYC member P.M.'ed me and offered to help out. Also, he was only 40 minutes from me.. HaHA.. He only had some older birds (8 months)and I already ordered eggs but I thought if I could fill (or close to fill) my pens then I would be well started when my eggs hatch and grow out and get a learning curve built in.. Long story short the BYC member kindly invited me to his place to get some quail. I ended up with a mixed flock of 24 birds including jumbos, white, buff, standard cots and 2 that I'm not sure what they are. They look darker then the standards with some stripping on the breast.. Well, one of them didn't make it because it launched itself as I was putting it in the pen so I cleaned and ate it.. impressive dish.. Then when I went to check them before the sun set there was an egg in there.... so I ate it too.. lol
I like them a lot and look forward to raising them.

Pics are here, scroll down to view..
