Quail Thread! Button, Coturnix, Bobwhite and More!

My favourite too.

I know Button quails as Chinese Painted quails so maybe that's where the painted came from? (Probably not though).
Haha there is no telling! I love how completely different each one is. I have one that has no white on it at all. I will get more pictures tomorrow of them.

@007Sean hurrrrryy with your pictures already ;)

View attachment 1225162 I am Obsessed with my quail!!! I even have broody tuxedo coturnix.

We have 7 little egg fairies and are hoping to add some more! So far we have a mixed color flock so it should be interesting to see what hatches...
I hope to have some broodys at one point!
The color combinations are gonna be awesome!

I'm getting my quail tomorrow! So stoked:jumpy
I've had them before but my 20 point of lay Coturnix quail all got eaten by a fox... along with my 20 purebred Wyandotte chicks. $300 gone! Ironic, though, because I currently have a fox problem as I'm getting quail again! This time though they'll be in my fox proof chicken coop for the time being:thumbsup
Oooh cant wait to see pictures!!

I have had a raccoon (i think, havent seen it yet)problem but i blocked the bottoms on the pin and it has helped so far....

Coturnix Quail:

I had these two gorgeous boys and had intended to breed from them but a rat (or rats) started to pull birds through the half inch hardware cloth! I couldn't find a hole in the wire anywhere, other than a few broken wires where the rat had tried to get in. One had tunneled under the run and must've been nabbing them there. So my poor birds are now confined to smaller quarters (well, the ones that are left). I still feel terrible I didn't realise what was happening sooner. :hit

This guy had an extra long feather as a young one, but it's not so noticeable now.

Yup, and in New Zealand, with no predators (other than a house cat with a death wish), they are huge and numerous, so we've hit them with poison. We've tried trapping them but we had to use a live capture trap because none of the other kinds of trap were big enough for these monsters, so that then means drowning them which isn't nice, and you just don't catch that many.

This little cinnamon girl, Spicey, was born out in the aviary. She helped her older sister incubate and raise the next generation! It was adorable and she's a fabulous mother (unlike the silver girl, Whistler, who isn't the most attentive mother)!
