quail tractors

thank you for the quail tractor pictures.. i wonder if making it high and putting a rock on top of it.. also adding some tree branches ... maybe using cups in the tops for nesting locations so they can do some behavior? we do have raccons here but that design looks really good

the idea of anything sitting on metal cages with no grass peeking though always disturb me. i know it's great for cleaning but i couldnt own and do that. cuy's getting tractor as well..

No snake issues where this tractor is at. If you have snakes i would just use 1/2"x1" welded wire for the sides instead of chicken wire. The welded wire makes it tougher and keeps larger animals like dogs out. This tractor is in a secure yard with no predator issues.

yeah it's freakin cool as hell

Im trying to make mine much higher. to give them a chance to jump and go up.. and put kinda like open nesting "cups" all long the tops so they can sit in there and feel "safe" or something..

are you able to get eggs easily in this system?

I personally prefer to raise my Cots on raised wire. I have tried the tractor route and it can work but I still prefer raised wire. Move your tractor daily as the ammonia smell builds up very fast and will burn grass. That being said here is a quail tractor that I built for a friend a few years back.

Each day when i move a tractor i take the garden hose on jet and wash the poo into the soil. This keeps the poo from burning the soil. Take a listen to this podcast about soil fertility to not be confused about what people say regarding poultry poo. http://theselfsufficientgardener.com/episode-199-five-myths-about-soil-and-fertility
