My neighbor gave me 3 green eggs from her EE. The father is a barred rock. I'm looking for the barred rock color with the EE look. Is it possible the green egg gene will be passed down if I get a hen?

Will this happen or am I out of luck? I have a few other eggs under there for her to take back and I'm keeping the 3 green egg ones. My Cochin is doing fabulous as far as sitting goes. I've been bringing her water and her favorite treats to eat. I put handfuls of starter food right in her nest box and boiling eggs.

I wanted her to sit so badly since she was being picked on by the others. Her feathers are all growing back and she's taking a liking to the new 3 babies I brought home in march. They are 12-14 weeks old and sit by her everyday. So sweet!

My cochin is happy again and no longer stressed! She's making her happy noises as she once did. She's one of my favorites, so I can't rehome her. I made her a saddle, but revising it for the winter, so they won't pick her wing bows or front. All will be Velcro, so there's an option to remove if needed.

WOOT! For hatching chicks. If it works of course!

Since EE's are mixes, it's really difficult to predict what their offspring will give you. If you want the green eggs, then keep any chicks that hatch with a pea comb. (blue egg gene is closely tied to the pea comb) You may also hatch some with a single comb, which will likely lay brown eggs. (green eggs can happen, but it's very rare with single combs) The chicks should be barred as barring from the father is usually passed down to all offspring.

Thank you! I have all 3 green eggs starting to develop! I hope one is a pea comb puffy faced hen!

I have an EE egg with a BR daddy that should be hatching this weekend! I'm super excited, cant wait to see what it looks like!!!
Good luck! Please send me a picture of the chick if your up to it! I'd love to see it. I can do the same if you'd like to compare.;)

Sounds like a plan to me!! Good luck to you, as well! I also have an EE coming out that had a Buff Orpington daddy, so that'll be interesting too!!

I have hatched quite a few of those in my time, both with BR and with Delaware males, both having a barring gene, of course, using Ameraucana and EE hens. I love the barred EEs, personally, like my blue barred hen, Riley.

Every one that had a pea comb laid a green egg. If the pullet came out with a single comb, as some of the Del crosses seem to do, it laid a brown egg.

I'm praying for at least one pea combed female out of the 3. I didn't want to hatch too many and needing to find homes for the others. It was tempting though! If I don't get a female pea combed, I'll try again when she goes broody the next time. I've never seen my Cochin so happy as I do now sitting on these eggs. Every time she cleans her feathers, she makes a feel good moaning noise. Our dogs make this noise when we scratch their ears! It's so nice to see her so happy. She is the lowest of the pecking order. I have the kennel set up for when they hatch from integrating the babies I bought this last March. I absolutely love the barred Easter Egger look!

It purely depends in luck as far as egg color. The way it works, there is one gene that controls basic egg color. It is going to be either blue or white. The brown and green comes from other genes and that shade can vary a bunch, but the base color is either blue or white. When those eggs hatch, look at the inside of the shell and you will see the blue. Blue is dominant, so if you just get one blue gene, your eggs will be green.

Since you are hatching green eggs, you know the mother has at least one blue gene. You just don't know if she has two or one. If she has two, all her offspring will have one. If she only has one, then some of her offspring will have the blue and some will have the white. You don't know which they'll get since it's purely random. Then you have to get a pullet. That's random too. Good luck with that. You have a decent shot but it is not a slam dunk.

If the barred rock rooster is a pure barred rock, the offspring will be barred. How much of that barring can be seen will depend on the genetics of the hen. With the hen being an EE, I have no idea what those genetics are. The odds are really good that the offspring will look a lot like the barred rock, but chicken genetics can do funny things. The Delaware Speckledhen mentioned is barred, but you can't see it on the white, for example. But your odds of getting a barred chicken where you can see the barring is real good.
