Question -Do momma hens turn mean with chicks?

Her mood will be protective. So she'll growl at you or anyone getting near her and be fluffed up. She may peck also if you try to reach under her. She acts this way because she needs to protect her babies from predators.

When the chicks are old enough she'll stop being broody and be normal again.

Some of my sweetest hens will 'growl' and peck at me if I get near them on the nests, and a few will even flat out attack my hand if I get near them once they have their chicks. They are teeny bantams though, so it's not much of a problem with me. After the chicks are grown enough to be on their own, they'll go back to normal.
