Opposition to GMO technology is more of a religion that it is any kind of scientific discipline. Therefore I doubt that many people who oppose GMOs have heard of a man known as Giordano Bruno. You see, in the Campo de’ Fiori on February 17, 1600 the people in Rome who opposed CHANGE, SCIENCE, LEARNING, AND MODERNITY held a lovely little tailgate party in Bruno‘s honor.
At this party they burned Giordano Bruno at the stake for heresy but only after first physically sewing his tongue to the insides of his cheeks so that Bruno could not speak out about science from his death pyre. They also denied Bruno the customary courtesy of choking him unconscious before the pyre was lit. All together quite a lovely affair from the view point of the forces of ignorance.
One such revolutionary belief Bruno held was that the Sun was just a star and that the Earth orbited the Sun. Another of Bruno revolutionary beliefs was that the Universe is limitless. As limitless as Bruno taught and believed the love of his God was limitless. I can see from the emotions displayed in some of the posts against GM technology that some of you would be just as pleased to see the CEO of Monsanto or any farmer who uses Monsanto’s technology meet the same fate that Giordano Bruno met in the Campo de’ Fiori 417 years ago. Two Hundred and eighty nine years after his tail gate party a statue of Bruno was erected in Rome at the exact spot of his fiery execution. This despite opposition from the church.
This effort was led by luminaries such as:
Victor Hugo, (who wanted higher living standards and freedom from hunger, and poverty as well as from arbitrary rulers over the masses);
Herbert Spencer, (he contributed to our understanding of the subjects of ethics, religion, anthropology, economics, political theory, philosophy, biology, sociology, and psychology);
Ernst Renan (a famous teacher and philosopher);
Ernst Haecker (a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist Shown on the left in the below picture. Haecker discovered, described, and/or named thousands of new species) Ernst Haecker walked the walk and talked the talk of the scientific method;

Henrik Ibsen (a major 19th-century playwright, director, and poet, he is the father of realism and one of the founders of Modernism); and
Fedinand Gregorovius (a historian and author who was best known for Wanderjahre in Italien, and his works about Medieval Rome, Byzantium, & Greek history. Besides biographies about the Popes. Gregorovius also wrote a biography about Lucrezia Borgia. The Jesuit Priest, Father John Hardon described Fedinand Geregorovinus as "a bitter enemy of the popes." What Father Hardon meant to say was, “A bitter enemy of superstition and ignorance!” I think that these men would all speak out against the approaching new dark ages some here seem to want to see descend on the human race by banning the scientific knowledge and advancement that GM technology represents.
This brings the tragic saga of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the Chicago Black Socks World Series fixing scandal to my mind. Let me hear it from all of those types who oppose GMOs. You can start by denouncing the evidence-less witch hunts conducted in your names and say that “It ain’t so Joe” that you are not trying to burn Monsanto or any other Bio-Tech company at the fiery stake of public opinion. How about it?
