Questions for Setter4 - Cremation - You MUST be respectful!!!

Thank you for asking that! I was wondering, too, and if there was anything you do to help them cope. My mom is wanting to be cremated, and it just kind of freaks me out, but I am willing to do what she wishes.

We do not often have contact with the families. MMost of the time the body is brought to us by the funeral director and they are the ones who are trained to help the family. Occasionally we have a family member come here to say their last good-bye or to just sit here while the cremation takes place. We had one family who wanted to actually push the button to start the cremation due to religious beliefs. All these things are fine with us but not all crematories allow family inside.

fatguyaz- I was just curious.. I'm not against cremation (although it does sort of freak me out for the same reasons henny'sMom stated).

For some people it's a fear of being buried but more and more it's an economic decision. With the cost of a traditional funeral being $6000 + more and more people are choosing cremation because it can be done for about 1/4 the cost. In our area you can do a direct cremation for about $1000. That is no embalming, no viewing and no casket, etc. Another option is to do a traditional viewing with a cremation afterward. Many funeral homes offer a rental casket for this and can save you that cost.
Another reason for the increase in cremation is that people see tradional burial as a waste of valuable space and also object to the chemicals used in embalming being leached into the soil.

I think I would rather be cremated. But there is a new trend of burial where you can be buried in a plain pine box in the ground in a designated area and be allowed to decompose naturally with no chemicals to leach into the ground. Very Green.

Is this trend getting very popular? And are you worried about it cramping your business?

I can appreciate your questions, Kim, but I am asking everyone to please not have a religious discussion int his thread. It leads to alot of fighting and arguing.

The first hint of any trouble and I will lock the thread and remove it from the forum.

Offenders will recieve a 3 day vacation from the forum.

I can not say what your sister may or may not have seen...
I can say that I have NEVER heard of such a thing!
Our retort has held bodies that are 7 ft. tall and ones that weigh in excess of 600 lbs. I can't imagine anyone bigger than that.
People who are very big boned may require a slightly longer time than a smaller person.
There is a book about cremation called Purified By Fire , that's how I think of cremation.

I am too. I wasn't jumpin on you. Burials never really sat well with me, i've had some family members buried and some cremated, and i was always a little unsettled by the whole burial process. It seems (to me) to be a big waste of space to bury bodies rather than cremate and scatter the ashes or keep them on a mantle or whatever you choose. The memories are the same, and you can visit an ern (sp?) wherever it might be. There is a lot of environmental impact of burying millions of big metal boxes in the ground, as well.

i think the same can be said for why someone would want their body to rot in a box underground? I think that is creepier than getting cremated for sure.

I'd rather be cremated. There are no Pagan cemeteries around here. At least not that I'm aware of.

Here in Pa. you can be buried on your family farm or in the woods, etc. as long as you have the land owners permission. It could be as pagan as yu want. lol

He was a very large man....I dont know the actual weight however but according to my sister he was very very heavy.

So - if I were to be cremated (hubby and I have talked about this) and I wanted to be spread somewhere like in the mountains or in the ocean (gosh, I'm sorry I dont know how else to put it...please forgive me) - are there laws for that? Do I need to get a permit or something?
