Raccoon Baiting

Nice job! A few months ago, we couldn't figure out how our chickens were going through so much food. At first we just thought it might've been because of the cold. Then one morning my fiance went out to check on them before work like he does every morning, and he saw a massive coon reaching it's hand into our feeder! Thankfully it never messed with our birds, but it definitely got a good amount of chicken food before we realized we needed to move it!

'Dispatch' can mean to move to another location......
..I suppose I should have said, 'I hope you killed and buried that raccoon'.

Well I was just funnin’ ... it was the word ‘permanently’ that stood out to me.... I wasn’t really meaning to delve into semantics, but you bring up an interesting point that has always stood out to me about this site....

I guess maybe on BYC ‘dispatch’ might mean something other than kill... but in any other trapping conversation I think ‘dispatch’ is almost always just a polite way to say kill... heck among ADC trappers ‘relocate’ is a polite way to say kill....

But I’ve also noticed on BYC ‘cull’ is almost always used for ‘kill’ ... where as in most other farming, agricultural, (and even manufacturing ) conversations it would mean ‘remove from production’.... be that butcher, sell off, give away, whatever... it just means don’t keep it for breeding or production...

I always find it odd to read someone on here saying they ‘culled’ a raccoon, but I’ve seen it several times....

In any case, I find myself following up my ‘reanimated raccoon’ joke by clarifying and defining terms... so I think it’s fair to say it was a failed attempt at humor, lol ;)

I used marshmallows and eggs (a weird combination, but it worked).
I'll bait it again tonight in case there are more. Thanks again!
Good catch!!!
My six yr old boy wanted to keep the one I caught when I showed him the pic, (already dispatched it).
I tried to find the old movie 'Rascal' with a boy that has a pet raccoon for him to watch. Pretty funny movie. We have a roku with Netflix, Hulu, and A Prime, plus Crackle and a bunch of other free channels. Could only find it pay per view.

Thanks again everyone! I'm amazed every time I come to this site at how helpful and fun people are here.
Congrats...hope it has been permanently dispatched.
And yes, it has been 'permanently dispatched'.;)
I called animal control and they euthanized it. Kind of sad because the coon looked almost sweet from the outside of the cage. But I know it's a whole different story inside...

I remember that one!
Another pet raccoon was in 'my side of the mountain'.
Might try your library...state wide sharing here works pretty good.
Not to Jack this thread (sorry sunny side )
I never thought of the library, I used to go there often, they do have movies. Ours isn't state wide I don't think, ours is tiny but tri-county on borrowing requests last I was there. I'll have to check it out, I'm sure my kids would like to anyway, our older kids always did.
'my side of the mountain', !!! yeah I remember that one, watched it in elementary school with the old projector and reel, '80s. I actually wanted to run away from home and do the same thing Lol.
It's a true story, and took place just a few towns from me, about 45mins away.
Bet my kids would like both of those, forgot about libraries, THANKS!

Those raccoons are smart critters!! I've watched one go in for the bait and keep one foot in the doorway so the trap cannot completely close and lock! Use a bait like tuna or peanut butter and spread it so it cannot be taken with one swipe. Once a coon has figured out a trap, you'll be hard pressed to catch it in one! And always release it a couple/few miles away or it will find its way home again!!

I have always had great luck putting in some wet cat food, that is nice and smelly and apparently tastes good too; but heck, I've even caught some who have been eating all the chicken's food by just dumping a handful of chicken pellets in there.
