Raise your own meat.

Arielle do you think the Muscovy's have more breast meat than Pekins? My friend told me ducks don't have that much in general.
Since I have never had pekin, so not butchered one, I really can't compare. THis was a young duck, hatched late summer, and of only moderate size compared to those early in the summer and the 1 yr olds. ( Talking all males here which are about twice the size of the females). More to the point-- I was pleasantly surprized as this one had the same amount of meat than my hatchery style chickens. Therefore I am expecting a LOT more meat on my 1 yr olds. THe legs are a bit skimpy.

We ate the breast meat then stewed the rest of the roasted duck.

Muscovies are supposed to be a meat breed.

Quote: Good man. Just don't loose that focus. And even my age group has serious issues, about a decade ahead of you. I was shocked how many women did not know how to cook when I was 18. Granted I was still developing my art but still the basics should be there. And no excuse for the guys either :p My man says he burns water and refuses to learn well that is partly how I won him over through his stomach

Nah your ranting is fine with me. Much of this though has to do with upbringing plus ambition. What I was not tough I took it upon myself to learn. And so can anyone else.

I'm an herbalist (among many other things), and think that every home should have a small area set aside for medicinal herbs. They don't take up much room, and it can be as simple as planting a flowerbed with them. The only cost is a few seeds, and you might even be able to get them for free if you know someone else who grows them.
I agree and would love to learn more than I know.

go to my herb thread. I am posting wilcraft herb IDs on there as well, and yes many are easy to grow

I've got my family for motivation. With one income in this day and age you gotta do everything else you can to make it.

And you're absolutely right, I had a friend tell me his dad used to say that if you can read you can do anything. Which at the time I thought was corny, but turns out I've done alot of things I "didn't know how to do" just because I picked up a book that told me how to do it. Plus if you fiddle with something long enough typically you can figure out how it works, and then you can fix it.

Quote: Absolutely. But even though my dad was a contractor.. I can't manage a hammer and nails. I still bend 80%of them -_- *sight* A screw driver is my best friend lol

Yes I get the single income thing. My husband retires soon from the service and is nervous abut finding a job. We will see. If we had a well that would help. City water tends to make gardening pricey, but I have been working with our difficult yard to produce better. And I may do goats for milk, if I can talk him into trying the milk. Feta is easy enough to make. I still want my Jersey cow though. Now that is good milk

I have 2 kids to get into college-- but I'm not paying for it. IF they want it , they will have to figure out how to get it. My job is to help them develop good learning skills, and most likely into the local trade school. I want them to have a skill that they can then use to pay for college. Out local trade school has most of the grads go on to college -- it's not the old style trade school ( which we do need -- I suspect that is why we have too many young people not contributing after high school. Our trade school takes the students with the best grades and attendence records by 8th grade. )
