Raising and Growing Our Organic and Not- So-Organic Foods

Pics
For anyone planning to put in fruit trees this year or already have them. We must understand that fungus, bacteria and pests are a real challenge. As always, MUST treat BEFORE plant gets the diesease. A few treatments are curative. BUT KNOW YOUR PRODUCTS and use correctly and wisely.

RIghtnow I am spraying for brown rot. FOr many years we had great peaches then all the fruit is covered with a tan powder and then the fruit shrinks....... I didnt know what it was. Took a couple years.

As we had NO peaches last year, the brown rot had no host to feed it, making this year the year to nip it in the bud.

I wanted an organic solution. Found many options!!

WIll start with a copper spray, then over the summer after fruit set change to another spray that is also insectacidal, so that cannot be used in the spring when the all important bees start buzzing.

Again. Take the time to learn the diseases of your fruit trees and then research organic options.

Peaches spraying.

Use protective clothing. Plan on changing your clothes asap after.

Please look for nurserys and univeristies for information-- these treatments are chemicals and must be chosen wisely and applied correctly. I skip home orchardists for this innfo.

Screwing up the couage to apply the Bonide TM Copper stuff.

1 oz dry powder equals 2 rounded tablespoons. THAT is not very accurate.
4 1/3 -13 oz mixed in water for each application for brown rot or leaf curl on peaches and nectarines; the same concentration for brown rot on cherries.
Apply at pink bud, then EVERY 5-7 days until 3 weeks before harvest.

PROBLEM---NO info on how much water to add to make a solution is the 4-13 oz mixed in to 1 gallon, 3, 5 gallons??? The recommend is 3 gallons on a medium tree. If a 8 x 8 tree is medium, the guy in video did not put on 3 gallons per tree!!! CONFUSED.

One of the videos above said to reapply immediately after a heavy rain for brown rot protection but was using a different chemical.

THis product cannot be used on anjou pears.

Missed the opportunity to spray with dormant oil.
Missed first spray at pink bud.
Buds Now opening up. The warm weather seemed to trigger bud opening. THey seemed to wait for the warmer weather to pop.

liquid stuff bonide copper fungicide as liquid is .5 -2.o fluid ounces per gallon and then use 1.1 to 2.3 gallons of diluted solution to cover 1000 ft sq.
10 % solution. ( the above is 7% of the same chemical in powder form)
235 fl oz per year over 1000ft sq

I like math, but this should be much easier to do for the home owner which the product is geared toward.

the powder is at 10 lbs /year limit for 1000 ft sq.

235 fl oz per year over 1000ft sq
equals
10 lbs /year limit for 1000 ft sq.

23.5 floz/ 100 ftsq
=
1 lb / 100ft sq

2.o fl oz is the max to mix in 1 gal. Sooooo.....

23.5/2.o = 12
23.5/12 = about 2.0
1 lb is 16 oz; 16/12 = 1.35 ish oz by wt.

1.35 oz by weight is mixed per gallon.

THen 4 1/3 is mixed into 3 gallons?????

Backing up: 1.35 x 3 = 3.0 + 1.0 =4 oz by wt soooo...
4 1/3 oz by wt is mixed into 3 gal water.

OMG--- who can mix this correctly without a Ph D in MATH!!!! :duc

5 trees, with only 1-2 limbs left, estimating 2 gal to do 5.

2 rounded tablesppoons per oz. Need 2/3 of 4 1/3. 4.33 x .66 = 2.6478 oz or more
2 x 2.6 = 5-6 rounded tablespoons/ 2 gallons. :clap

MY HEAD IS SPINNING!!!!!:barnie
