Raising Baby Chick-Along

Pics
Yesterday I was cleaning coops and I let the little East Frisian Gulls wander with the big girls for a while. They did pretty well, mostly kept to themselves, but then one of my bigs decided to give chase and little EFG just -quick as you please - flew waaayy up into a tree! I had heard about their flying prowess, but this was pretty amazing. She flew down again once the big girl realized there was no way she'd be able to even attempt such a feat...until evening, when three of them decided to follow those wiley exchequer leghorns up to sleep. I was at a meeting, so DH and the two boys used the pool net to get them out. I'm kind of glad I wasn't here to witness that!

Just delivered my second sale group to their nice new owner. Five very lucky ladies to M. F. She has a roomy and beautiful setup. Here's a pic she sent me of the girls in quarantine just after I left.
She's already named them. I made sure she knows about BYC, so I'm hoping she'll visit soon. Lovely lady.

Detail of where the metal roof meets the skylight. Caulk is next. Chicks are being shipped monday!

I have had various feelings when I've seen the places my chickens have gone to live. I love when they're like this one - all set up and ready to go. Sometimes I just have to hope for the best for them!

So, every time I finally let a group of young chickens out to free range, they almost always spend a few weeks glued to their coop and run. They will make occasional forays out, but not too often.
Yesterday I left the gate open for the youngest group of East Frisian Gulls while I did some cleaning. They wandered out and seemed to just be hanging out around the coop so I left it open. In almost no time, though, they were out free ranging with the best of them - like this is what they were born to do! So interesting! Now if I can just keep them out of the trees as it gets dark. Guess I'm on "tree patrol" tonight!
