Raising chickens against zoning laws!

I have heard ther are loopholes in the law in some places that allow people to take over someone else's property if they have been using it for a number of years. So if his workshop is on your property fo say 10 years, he might be able to legally take ownership of it. I'm not an attorney, I just read something about it.

I agree with hiding your coop at least from the street. I heard of a gal that had to get rid of her chickens because a neighbor saw her coop from his roof. I have mine in the far corner away from everyone else's house, behind a 6 ft stockade fence and under huge holly bushes. So no one can see my coop from their yards, or windows or roofs. I had to make it short and smallish. My neighbors are also OK with my girls. But, you know how everything is OK until it's not OK. I've had one neighbor tell me his wife heard my girls from an open upstairs window (he says it was not a problem). Also, you can not complain about anything now, because your neighbors will always have this over you (again it's all OK until it's not OK). I trapped a male feral cat that was beating up and injuring/biting my feral kitty (that is fixed). I couldn't call animal control to come get him. I had to take him in and I was a little nervous about it. I also trapped a young possum that was wanting to hang out in my yard, I couldn't call animal control, I released him in a park by a river. I will have to do a better job at not attracting predators. I have to avoid having anyone from the city come to my house. I feel a little vulnerable about the whole thing.

I'm also lucky that I have reasonable neighbors and my HOA president is also reasonable. But, if someone turned me in, there is nothing he could do for me. I would be just as heartbroken as all the other folks who had to surrender their girls.

So, we're agreed. It might be better to keep chickens until they find out, apologize later and give up the birds? I think we should always make sure that we use hand drawn pictures in our profile, or at least wear fake beards.

Clandestine contraband chickens rule!!!

Our county rules on chickens are not very defined. We live in an area that used to be rural but is currently experiencing heavy development. We are checking our HOA rules and planning to get 3 hens. I have 11 eggs in the incubator now (we hatch them for a farmer friend). He has plenty of room for more chickens so we are planning to get a couple dozen rare breed hatching eggs. Three hens will stay with us and the rest will go to the farm. There are 3 large chicken coops on the farm and only 1 is in use.

Researching chicken breeds right now.

hi I'm in the same situation as you. our town just voted and outlawed chickens. but I live very far from town but our area was annexed into the city. I have a huge lot with NO neighbors behind me and I too asked my neighbor before hand. my other neighbor does not know but doubt he would complain if he did. at least I'm praying he wouldn't. as across the street they can have horses so I'm right on the boundary line although it is still city my prayer is I can live happily with my birds and no one will say anything. just like you.. I'll keep you in my prayers and you keep me in yours. with some luck we will be OK.. worse case I'll have to move them to my mother's property which is down the road but I pray that won't happen. best wishes to you and God bless

how is everything working out for you? just wondering? update please. I hope all is going well. it upsets me to no end that as property owners we don't have the right to have chickens on our OWN property. we don't have the right to fresh eggs. something is defiantly wrong with this picture! people have gotten so ignorant about chickens they treat them as if they are vermin or something nasty. it upsets me to no end! the ignorance MUST stop!! I can't believe our towns outlaw chickens as if we are some sort of criminal. just because we want chickens! its so very sad and frustrating to no end! at our counsel meeting this month when they shot down making chickens legal they actually said that chickens will disturb the already awful air quality... can you believe that excuse! I will NOT be voting for those council members that's for sure! its utterly ridicules that we have to be made criminals because we want chickens! something is seriously wrong with this picture!! don't you agree?

I definitely agree with you realsis! My town just voted to allow up to 6 chickens and no rooster unless you have more than 10 acres. I have 3 acres and 30 chickens! My neighbors don't care so I won't have a problem but it is still annoying that I actually have to break the law to have them.
