Lol. My mom already saves them to return to the people to help save the environment. Lol. I didn't realize the math was that bad. There are 4 people in my family, but still we can't eat that many.

How many chicks should I buy? I would like to have 6 or 7 when they are grown up. Should I buy 8 and budget for one dying or is that not a problem? Some people start the babies in blue or pink color baby pools at Walmart.
Once they start to jump out, they move them to an XL tall bin.
Some people keep them in an old play pen or pack n play for babies too. Remember, they GROW FAST!!! they aren't lil for long.

I think you will be an excellant chicken keeper. 7 should be fine. If too many die, then you have problems and need to start over anyway or quickly go get more chicks.

Some people keep them in an old play pen or pack n play for babies too. Remember, they GROW FAST!!! they aren't lil for long.

How big should it be? 1 square foot per chick? If that is the case, I could get two of these and put them together to make ~8 square feet. One side could have food and water and the other could have heat.

You will need a brooder.
The least money way is a chicken heat lamp and light and some kind of thermometer to not cook your chickens. Remember: the heat will be HOT down inside those plastic bins. So you will want to give them a cooler area to run to if needed.
You will need to clip that kind of lamp higher above the plastic bins to get the heat right.
This is also a good time to get your coop and outside run built. You will need it as soon as its built. Because the babies can go into it.
But, its dangerous to use the heat lamp in a coop re: Fire Hazard

Save money for other stuff you will need and want. Buy 1 lamp and 1 light. Tractor Supply, Rural King has it all. Check out the prices of what they have. Offer to your parents to sale eggs to help pay for a heated brooder. You can always look on amazon or Craigslist or Thrift Stores for stuff.
