The hatcheries do not think like we do. To them, a rooster has little $ value. From a business point of view it saves them money in the long run by giving the roo away for warmth than taking a chance on the small order getting cold.
So mean...Definitely not here in Canada...

I agree. I don't believe animals are expendable. I definitely would have appreciated a heads up from Metzer. I could have at least read up on chickens. This little chick is adorable, he hops right in my hand. I'm so happy that my friend was able to adopt him!

Your order cam from Metzer? Interesting, I didn't know that they hatched chicks too.

I am glad you found him a home. All life is precious.
 
The only chickens they offer for sale are meat birds. If it's a white chick it's a Cornish Cross and they are not bred to live long lives. If it's a red chick it would be the red broiler. They can live longer. Either way, the person taking the chick needs to be prepared.
