there are many of meth heads that will takt the shot and they will keep coming.. and then steal your gun and then use it against you... i would rather give him/her my purse and car keys and go home to my children at night then have them view me in a pine box...

That is why I have had firearms training BEFORE getting a gun. They cannot take it away with the clip in. I wouldn't think of carrying without the knowledge. If you shoot in the right place, they don't/can't keep coming. I also know how to defend myself hand to hand, but would rather not try my skills on someone twice or three times my size. Thus the gun. I understand what you are saying, and that is great if that is what is best for you. But being a SAHM travelling with my two girls, (insert situation), I will carry everywhere because I have the right and feel the need to not risk the off chance. I hope and pray I never have to even pull my gun, but the comfort of knowing it's there if, God forbid, the need arises......is priceless.

thats great that you have fantastic training... and have the knowledge of hand to hand...... BUT there is always going to be the lil old lady who got the permit 100 yrs ago and still carry because they (whoever enforces these things) cant get enough evidence to revoke her license.....or the paris hiltons of the world who have the right to carry but would try and answer the gun when their phone rings (ok i am exaggerating) ... and even the able bodied male of female who will freeze... fear does some pretty funky things

Quite frankly I am more terrified of the higher numbers of old ladies with drivers liscenses that should no longer have them!! LOL!!

Because I carry it to and from various locations, and I WILL NOT leave it in my car, period. It does not leave my control.

But I'm not going to drive 30 miles out of my way to drop it at home because I need to stop somewhere during my commute, I previously lived in an area where it wasn't that unusual to return to my car only to find four or more rattlesnakes enjoying the shade it provided, and well, frankly, why shouldn't I carry my gun?

I walk confidently and with my head high, and I do that with or without the gun. I don't put myself in stupid danger, with or without the gun.

I also used to have a paper route that occasionally required me to get out of my car and walk the paper through an apartment complex to the door. I had to deal with both threatening humans and threatening animals, and on more than one occasion, the incident involved the human threatening me with the animal. My job did not actually require the gun (and depending on my supervisor, it being known I carried it would have resulted in my losing the job).

Major rule of gun safety - there is no such thing as an unloaded gun. Not even if you personally unloaded it yourself 30 seconds previously and it hasn't left your site. I know two people that were shot with 'unloaded' guns.

Citation needed.

And at least once in the town I live in, the PTA has met at the gun club.

That depends on where you shoot them. And most guns these days contain more than one bullet. And frankly, if they are the type to keep coming after you have shot them, they are probably going to kill you anyway.

I've known quite a few police officers. Remember that guy who took me to the range that I referenced earlier? Guess what he did for a living. Quite a few police officers spend pretty minimal times at the range practicing, and I'd wager a couple people on these boards regularly spend more time target shooting than the average police officer.

I forget the details, but there was a shootout at a bank a few years back where the perps were about 50 feet from the cops, the cops all emptied their weapons, and the perps didn't get hit once.

What exactly makes you confident in your judgment regarding the level of need any of us may have for a firearm at any given moment?

And you have a 1 in 300,000 chance of being killed by lightning in the US. Odds are higher in Texas and Florida. Lightning kills more people than tornadoes and hurricanes combined, but a bit less than floods.

In July 1998, 5 Firefighters Were Injured When Lightning Struck Their Firetruck In Las Vegas, NV.

I think maybe the reason that people question the need of a particular individual to carry a firearm is that often there is a lack of evidence of imenent danger. Statistically, it is probably unlikely that any single person needs a firearm on there person more than another unless they have a (personal problem or problem person in thier lives), a (dangerous job) or live in a particularly dangerous area (or dangerous & high populated area), are a celebrity or important person, or believe that they are appointed to stop criminals and are more likely to encounter them than others. I think that unless you fall into one of those catagories, that most people carry because they have been or have close aqquaintances that are crime victims, or overestimate the probabliity of the percieved dangers.
